To be fair, I do know one Joseph Smith got right, even though it might not exactly be a prophesy.

In D&C 3:4 (given in 1828), we find this: “For although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him…”

Just 30 days from making that boast, on June 27, 1844; Joseph Smith was shot in Carthage jail.
Prodigal,
I want you to know that your post here is the most derogatory comment I have read from a Catholic. You win the prize. I think you are sick. Bye.

Prodigal Son,
Yes, it appears to be so, or at least a prediction. You can gloat over the unpunished mistreatment by the Missourians of the LDS if you want. You can gloat over the fact that the United States, though it suffered the effects of a Civil War, still stands. I would say personally that I am glad Joseph Smith said a few things that would test the faith of people such as yourself, since what is really at issue is whether you can be guided by the Holy Ghost in your life and where it leads you.

You will think I have copped out. I just don’t see the need to discuss these issues with you.
You are mistaken. I am not gloating, over the mistreatment of Mormons or the civil war. Nor, am I gloating over the fact that Joseph Smith made false prophesies. One false prophesy makes a false prophet. It’s an extemely sad situation, all the way around.

To the OP, have a cup of coffee on me. 😉

Good point, Parker - I was thinking the same thing. Wars and rumors of wars. Did Joseph Smith have any end times revelations?
Christine,
Basically he confirmed the many prophecies from the Bible. He did confirm that the Millenium would start sometime during the early part of the seventh thousand years of the earth’s temporal history (meaning probably sometime during this century we are now in). That can be found in D & C 77.

Sorry my comment to the other writer was sandwiched in between your very kindly comments and questions. Bless you for your kindness and always-considerate manner. I know that you are blessed for it. Thanks again.

That was a low blow. 😦 Actually, though, Joseph Smith did predict his own death:

The last item written by Joseph Smith in his journal is an entry from Saturday, June 22, 1844, now recorded in History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 546:

I told Stephen Markham that if I and Hyrum were ever taken again we should be massacred, or I was not a prophet of God.

Shortly thereafter he and Hyrum were placed in Carthage Jail and then murdered by a mob. Others who were with them survived the attack, but Joseph and his brother were killed, as predicted.

Fifteen years earlier in 1829, Joseph received a revelation that hinted at his future murder. Doctrine and Covenants 5:22 urges Joseph to be faithful, “and if you do this, behold I grant unto you eternal life, even if you should be slain.”

Prodigal,
So I take it that you don’t think almost every nation on earth has had the effects of some kind of war (the World Wars, or any other conflict either internal or external) at some point in time during the period from 1865 until now?
You have to look closer, at verse 2. And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place. The war would pour out on all nations, beginning at this place. Now, look at part of verse 1 that states where that beginning place is, “…beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina…”

But those comments by Joseph Smith are acceptable?

I am sorry that this is a fruitless argument, but until a Mormon comes to the point of questioning and realizing the truth that the Book of Mormon is false, they will not be open to the real truth of Jesus. The Mormons have thrown out all of Christianity as we know it.
Really? The book of mormon is false? And you know this based on conclusive evidence? Did you find a manucript written in JS’s hand? What is the real truth of Jesus? I would bet my cowboy boots that mormons have more in common with christianity than most protestant churches. And that mormons live wonderful christian lives and by doing so, they feel close to heavenly father and Jesus Christ.

ParkerD,

I apologize if you were offended by my post.

Maybe now you can understand how it feels to have people come to a Catholic forum and repeatedly state, the Catholic Church is apostate Church, even though they cannot show this to be a fact.

We’re told our interpretation of scriptures is wrong. When we challenge the teachings espoused by Mormons, we’re told our interpretations of Mormon writings are wrong. In fact, we are told we are wrong on every point.

Why do all the Mormons come here and project our faith is false, if not but to proseltyze?

Lets see…mormons read daily on this section of the forum that Joseph Smith is a false prophet, a child molester, the book of mormon is false, the mormon church is not christian but whacky etc. And what should mormons do? Remain quiet and allow the slander to continue without a rebuttal? Catholics are general rude to mormon on this forum. And what they do write about the lds church is to get a rise in the mormons. Hence, mormons come here to fight back.

This is not true. A prophet can make a prophesy that does not come to pass. Much depends on what happens after the prophesy is made. Check this out:

You’re barking up the wrong tree whyme. Catholics believe the Bible to be the inerrant, inspired, God breathed, word of God. A link to a “skeptics” website, where they clearly try to interpret scriptures for themselves, does not help your argument with me.

**Deu 18:20 But the prophet, who being corrupted with pride, shall speak in my name things that I did not command him to say, or in the name of strange gods, shall be slain.

Deu 18:21 And if in silent thought thou answer: How shall I know the word that the Lord hath not spoken?

Deu 18:22 Thou shalt have this sign: Whatsoever that same prophet foretelleth in the name of the Lord, and it cometh not to pass: that thing the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath forged it by the pride of his mind: and therefore thou shalt not fear him.**

whyme is agnostic, bordering on atheism. He likes to feel good at church.

What came first the chicken or the egg?

What would happen if Mormons came here without their accusations against the Catholic Church? The things I learned about Mormonism, came from me researching Mormonism to counter their arguments. I never realized there was so much wrong. It’s a glass house discussion, in my opinion…

The problem with with that prophesy is the fact that the war did not pour out upon all nations, but I’d be interested in seeing the “spin”…
Britain was on the side of the south. Plus, the northern navy blockaded the south and cotton was not shipped from southern ports. Thus, war did pour out upon all nations. 🙂

Go back and look at the threads and see the antimormonism. Usually such threads were started by catholics. It is not a glass house discussion. As has been said on mormon boards there are always answers to critic opinions about the lds church.

Mormons come here repeating, “the Catholic Church is false”, without any real sources other than private interpretation of a few scriptures.

The Jews crucified Christ, Romans tried to wipe Christianity completely out, pagans would have loved to prove Christianity wrong, yet no one records a great apostasy that would have supported their purposes.

Julian the apostate, misinterpreted Christ’s prophesy about the destruction of the Temple and understood it to be the Temple would never be rebuilt. Julian set out to rebuild the Temple to prove Christ wrong and help put an end to Christianity. His efforts were unsuccessful, as we know the Temple has not been rebuilt to this day.

Jews, accused of killing the Messiah, could have vindicated themselves by proving a great apostasy.

Flavius Josephus, a Jewish general, was captured by the Romans during the wars of the Jews. The Romans allowed him to live, so he could record what happened. He details the destruction of Jerusalem. He even speaks about the Christ, who had followers known as Christians.

Historians could have become famous if they had recorded a great apostasy! Secular historians live for such a discovery.

The Church itself, that has writings from the earliest Church fathers, wrote nothing in defense of a great apostasy. Yet, we have writings about every heresy through time, until present day.

The supposed apostates, would have written something in defense of their actions had the Church totally corrupted. Nothing!

For the first, approximately, 4 centuries, Christians were persecuted, even to death! They could not have made all evidence of a supposed great apostasy disappear totally.

History would not have been able to squelch a great apostasy. Someone, somewhere, would have written about it. But, there’s nothing.

There was nothing about a great apostasy, until the 1800s.

Use some common sense and figure it out…

To show the imperfection of the bible, in John 5: 46 it states that Moses wrote about Jesus but yet there is no such record in the bible. And yet, mormons have the book of moses. Could this be what Jesus is talking about? It can seem so.

Jesus claims that Moses wrote about him. Where? It’s a shame he didn’t give us chapter and verse.

Is this it below?
