Since most of us know what the grave sins are and also do those the most does that mean most sins are mortal sins?

Venial sins are bad too. We shouldn’t be so stuck on what is mortal and what isn’t. Sin is sin and sin is bad no matter the severity. We are suppose to strive away from sin no matter the type of sin

No. There are three elements to mortal sin. It has to be grave, you have to know it is grave, you have to freely consent to it. So even for grave matter it isn’t always a mortal sin.

Also, there are plenty of venial sins out there. They aren’t in themselves as damaging as mortal sins, but they set the stage for you to freely consent to mortal sins so they aren’t to be taken lightly.

Yes I know but I’m asking this to know how often we should go to confession. I know as Catholics we are supposed to go once a year but if most sins are mortal I would rather go every week to every other week.

Don’t be scrupulous about it. A mortal sin can not be done by accident. It must be done with full knowledge it was wrong and without any addiction or other mitigating factors. The sin must also be grave matter. Those three together make mortal sin not an easy thing to do.

But it is beside the point, sin is bad no matter what

You should discuss this with your priest. He can guide you in determining which of your sins may be mortal.

I see, but let’s take lust or lying for example, those are grave sins and also tend to be the most common ones people struggle with. So wouldn’t it mean that every time you lust or lie you have committed a mortal sin and have to go to confession?

Do you mean have an arousing/objectifying thought or do you mean deliberately engage in lustful thoughts and fantasies? The former, provided you work to get it out of your head once you notice it, isn’t even a venial sin. The latter, provided you know lust is wrong, is a full mortal sin.

Note: I didn’t see your other posts. If you are actually worried if you are sinning, you need to see a priest. If you are only wondering on an academic level, let us know and we will keep talking about it.

So is it only a mortal sin if you commit the sin after thinking and knowing it’s a sin and doing it anyways or does that not matter and if you do a sinful act willingly regardless of at the time you were thinking about the sin or not? For example in case I didn’t explain it well enough lets say someone lies but before they lie they think about God and know its a sin and then proceeds to lie anyways that would be a mortal sin but lets say someone lies in the moment but they weren’t thinking of the sin or anything like that would that make it a venial sin or a mortal sin?

Before I answer that, is your interest academic or are you worried about your own sins?

Given this statement and your posting history, it seems that you are scrupulous. You should be working on this with your priest, particularly clarifying your questions about mortal sin, and on how frequently you should go to confession. I would strongly advise against going to confession that often if you are scrupulous.

Please seek help offline. You are in my prayers.

Others would be well advised not to continue to reply, lest a multitude of opinions further upset the OP.

Yes, absolutely correct. My Priest suggests going every month.

I don’t think I have sinned recently I have been trying really hard and praying to stay out of temptation but I mainly want to know for academic reasons and if I ever slip and fall short I want to know what is and isn’t considered mortal or venial sin and how I should go about it. But so far I am doing good sin wise (I think lol)

Thanks, I will try to see if I can have a discussion with my priest. Thanks again 🙂

@edward_george1 is a priest. His recommendation is what you should be listening to.

The obligation is to go once a year if you are conscious of having committed a mortal sin. It is not a blanket requirement for everyone regardless if they have committed a mortal sin or not.

See Canon Law 989 I believe.

I check posting history and look for certain patterns. It wasn’t that statement alone, but the fact that the OP has asked similar questions before and has given certain indications of scrupulosity.

I don’t just wantonly flag or label people on here. I check rather thoroughly, look for the signs, and then make the call. Even if someone presents as scrupulous on their first thread or two, I don’t say something unless I have more to go on. I know the signs, since this comes up in confession quite a lot.
