With the increase in mass shootings and such in America, is it possible that this reflects an increase in demonic possession? It is obviously very evil, but does it qualify as possession? If so, shouldn’t the priests be making their parishioners aware that this is to blame and instructing them to pray more or holding more prayer services like adoration and benediction for example?

(Disclaimer: I say this because even though I know there are many holy priests in the US, there are also priests who only preach what the parishioners want to hear and only offer the sacraments, etc around their own schedules.)

They might be. No one can be certain unless a priest checks out the individual, and finds that he does some things that seem abnormal, like levitating or something like that.

Some may be possessed.

All are 100% definitely either obsessed or oppressed.

Doubtful. Mans capacity to commit evil acts is pretty limitless. The common thread among all the shooters is they come from broken family’s.

True, but most people who come from a broken family don’t become mass shooters.

I guess I just find it hard to wrap my head around how a person could do something so evil. Maybe, they do not realize the gravity of how evil the action is because their conscience was never formed or they are psychologically ill. It sill is mind-boggling though.

I tend to see it this way. If you judge a tree by its fruits these shooters have the evil one written all over them.

It is so nieve to think that these mass murders are anything new. In past times it was done in the form of war…but it was just as evil if not more grusome.

@alice24 is a historian and can probably give you a better idea about how mass-killings worked in the past.

If you want a good quick overview the youtube channel “Extra History” https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhyKYa0YJ_5Aq7g4bil7bnGi0A8gTsawu
is a great resource on the reality of how people behaved in centuries past. It might give you insight into what a relitivly calm and peaceful world we live in today despite random acts of violence.

Yes murderers are possessed. They are possessed by the evil demon known as egotism.

Thanks for tagging me.

For the past times, there are as many “violence concepts” as power concepts through the empires. Killing was not always murder, and murder was not widely seen as acceptable. The question of political killing- or murder - is a question of circumstances. A culture as in the ancient roman empire for example was highly into official trials instead of simply assassinating someone. There must have been a serious danger to the empire until a citizen would arm himself - too heavy was the fear of civil war. Even in cultures as classical greece, where the concept of a man´s honour would allow him in case of seeing his wife in flagranti to kill them would allow this only in serious emotional rush - otherwise he would found guilty of murder.
War between foreign enemies is a difficult thing. Empires were at war, even christian empires as all the other ones, but there was a thought of the soldiers need to seek forgiveness for this.
ALL this has nothing to do with our modern understanding of mass murder like a crazy shooter during an amok run. Extreme cruelty was in some cases a topos for a strong and honest grief of , for example, a nobel woman after an enemy killed her husband. Revenge was acceptable then, but this are a) literal sources, made to repeat for entertaining, too, and b) revenge would have fallen under “serious issues” and “loyality to the lost one” and would not be an emotional outrush.
If I may give my thoughts on the OPs question: There were always cases like this in history. But we don´t do much as a community to improve people´s mental health with defragmentated socal networks and families.

I’m sure I read that chief exorcist of the Vatican Fr Gabriel Amorth thought both Hitler and Stalin were possessed.

Why do you, like everyone else, choose evil? We all choose evil. The particular evils we like, and justify, don’t seem so bad, to us. But they are evil acts nonetheless. We may not understand someone’s choice of a particular evil but it is the same, at root, as ours. Fornication, adultery, divorce, pornography, masturbation, sodomy, and abortion are grave evils that are quite popular these days. Why do people choose these grave evils? The answer is always the same. The person sees some good in it and ultimately is focused on himself.
The common thread among all the shooters is they come from broken family’s.
That and go to government schools, and take psychiatric drugs that are known to have serious negative side effects that may induce one to commit mass murder.

Not many of them.

Some act on impulse, some are more deliberate. First vs. second degree murder in civil terms.

Levitating is one of the possibilities of demon possession. Another is a hatred for sacred things and a total disgust for going to church. The “parlor tricks” of the demon can be almost anything to get attention. If you have a chance, read some books on it by Catholic exorcists.

The demonically possessed can be physically aggressive, or know things that they couldn’t possibly have learned in their own life.

The phenomena of possession is not often very blatant until challenged. Demons like to work under the table, so to speak.

It is far more likely that the mass shooters are people with a mental illness and/or an inability to cope in a normal manner with the stresses of life, which might include in some cases a dysfunctional family situation, failure in school, a romantic breakup, etc. And there are a few who just make a decision to choose evil because it looks attractive due to revenge or making them feel tough or getting a lot of attention.
