When i become Catholic in 2010 i chose for my godmother my husbands mother. For 5 years i still haven’t told my previous orthodox Godparents that i am Catholic. They never asked me and since we live very separate from each other they have never seen me going to Catholic Church. Is it a sin that i keep it from them? Should i tell them of my change? They are very proud of being my Godparents and they love me and my family. And most of all, are they still my Godparents even if i changed from orthodox to Catholic religion?

to say in Yiddish OH VEY!!! My father was Protestant and was a godparent to my niece in the Catholic church because our church saw him raise the three of us Catholic.I think you could ask your parish priest for a dispensation and keep the God parents in the Roman church. The problem is will they have a heart attack when you tell them you aren’t orthodox anymore.
A God parents job is to raise you in your relationship w God (Trinity) in the tenents of the church. There are a few differences there. My son had to convert to Orthodoxy before he could marry his wife in the Republic of Georgia. I sent little Jesus coloring books over for my grandbabies to color. No Pope pics. Noah and the Ark, Jesus and the Little children. All benign things Mariam was upset thinking I wanted to convert them to my church. When over here. I took her to her church and I just could make my mass on the way home. She was crying because they are forbidden to enter other churches.
So Rome might say yes, your Ortho godparents could still be your Roman ones but they probably would decline and cry their hearts out to find out you switched.
So go on internet, ask orthodox priest. We have Apologists and they can give you accurate answer and if it is yes, you will need written document to prove to their priest for him to prove to your godparents and then everyone will be happy.

A life’s journey is very exciting, Jesus is love and that love binds all. Remind that to the Eastern Rite side.

Jesus is the light of the world, may His light shine amongst men. (song)

They remain your godparents. They were there at your baptism. Those are the names that would be entered into your baptismal record.

When you were received into full communion you had a sponsor, your mother-in-law. The Church distinguishes between that sponsor and your godparents, just like it does between a Catholic’s Confirmation sponsor and godparents if they are not one and the same.

Even a convert who is baptised at the Vigil can have a godparent who is not the person who was the sponsor throughout his/her catechumenate. The Rite (at least the Canadian one) uses the term “sponsor” for the person who accompanies you on the long journey to the Rite of Election and the term “godparent” for the person who stands with you at the Rite of Election and witnesses your Baptism and Confirmation. Often they are one and the same but not always.

I find the topic of a godparent or a sponsor for an Orthodox person coming into full communion confusing.

The Orthodox are fully initiated. Coming into full communion does not involve any rites or any sponsor.

My Ortho experience is European. Their Bible I believe is different. They guard it. I needed a translation for a little Bible story from Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Mary and Joseph and Jesus. The Nativity, The escape to Egypt, The beginning of His ministry at 30, some of His miracles , His arrest and torture, death and resurrection. God awoke a friend of mine and it is a little poem, gently written for children w children pictures. God has had it translated in 12 or more languages. I was so happy to say I could get it translated in Khartuli, the language of Georgia. Well, they felt I wanted to convert the Orthodox children. All of that should be in their Bible. ARgghh. When I get over there in a few months and see MAMA Davidi, we will have a loving reckoning. MaMa is Father and DeDa is MaMa. Opposite of English
So, what is written in the books and what is believed in the heart are two different things I pray American Orthodoxy will be more open. As I said my Dad was a protestant and a godparent.

May all go easy for you, pathed the way w the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
