Are my sins forgiven?

Greetings all!

I had just recently gone to confession today , and as I had got done I had realized that I had forgot to tell some sins, I hadn’t numbered the amount of times I had committed a sin, and during my confession I had tried to be vague but as clear as possible, for example during the confession I had confessed that I had looked at porn and indulged myself in acts that go along with porn. As a guy I assumed the priest would understand what I was trying to imply. So I was wondering if my sins are forgiven or is my confession null and void so to speak? To be honest I had never numbered the amount of times I had committed a mortal sin, so should I try and keep track so for the next confession I can number my sins?

Your sins are forgiven, however you should confess the mortal sins that you forgot at your next confession.
 
Yes your sins are forgiven, you would have to intentionally leave some out for it to be a problem.

If you cannot remember the exact number, an approximate count, or an approximate frequency suffices (just be clear that you’re being approximate). If the priest has questions, doesn’t understand what you mean by something, he will ask you to clarify.

I can’t think of anything that you could do by accident to invalidate a confession, assuming that you are trying to confess all mortal sins.
 
You should confess, before GOD, and before a Priest. And make a full confession so that you may fully again be aware of your complete connection with GOD.

But GOD knows what’s in your heart before you do, and the Priest knows that GOD knows.

GOD already knew, and was waiting for you to know his forgiveness long before you even entered the confessional.

You probably should do a more thorough examination of conscience before you confess. Then write down your mortal sins if you think you will forget any. When you do a detailed examination, you will be able to at least give a good estimate of how many mortal sins and what kind you committed.

If you are scrupulous, please see your spiritual advisor before using this list.

confession of sin is one thing-- because i been in bars and and in company break rooms and have heard catholic’s confessing to sins–

but i 'm under the impression the purpose of going to a priest is to be “repentant” of committing sins. meaning turn away from it… change you life – change you behavior – with the grace of the holy Spirit…

but maybe i got it wrong-- some thing about being sorrowful- or having a "good confession) ? staying away from the carnal mind-- as saint paul says in romans-- and gal

Gala 5:16 (NKJV) I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of … we would be saying "If we are led by the Spirit, we don’t have to be obedient …to the flesh
 
Thank you all for your replys. iron donkey thank you for the clarification, since every time I think I should tell the amount of times I have comitted a specific mortal sin, I just draw a blank, because I don’t usually keep track:o. jeremiah I just started making lists before I go to confession, it’s just that I had learned that a specific belief I had held was considered a mortal sin, after I had my confession today.
 
I would also like to ask, after my confession the priest had asked me to read from the middle of the book of luke for my penance before the night was up. The priest didn’t specify what chapter and verse so I’m assuming that it’s up to me what chapter to read as long as it’s in the middle? I ask since I’ve been told that if I don’t do my penance that the sins arn’t forgiven.

Your sins would still be forgiven though deliberately failing to do your penance would be a new sin.
 
I feel like I’m just paranoid but I had just remembered that while I was at my confession I had confessed a mortal sin vaguely but I had committed the sin in multiple different ways. Should I just confess it at my next confession even though I had confessed it vaguely earlier today? Sorry if I’m just repeating things :(.

Naming the kind of sin committed should be adequate. One may act dishonestly in quite a variety of ways, for example: telling lies about another person, cheating on a test, withholding information someone has a right and need to know, and so forth. Unless the priest asks for clarification, however, it should be sufficient to say “I acted dishonestly on three occasions.”

While the Priest can ask questions-it is important to remember that Confession --is not interrogation - it is Confession. We accuse ourselves of our sins.

It is true that for venial sins - dishonestly (lies) can yes be venial-- one does not need to get into much (if we confess them) But other dishonestly can be mortal --then we need to say more --like I committed perjury --I cheated seriously etc

It is important that for mortal sins that we get to get to the kind: If it was sexual relations with a married person it is not fornication but adultery if it was the murder of an unborn child it is abortion (“murder” does not cover it). Now we one does not need necessarily to use the theological term --but one gets to what one did – I had intercourse with a married person 2x-- I took a car etc.

As to the other person – he should prepare and go meet with Priest for confession and explain what happened in past confessions --the Priest can guide him.

This is a good addition. My concern was that a lot of detail/description is not only unnecessary, it may also be inadvisable in some cases.

In his opening post, Dennis used the term “vague” to describe “I had confessed that I had looked at porn and indulged myself in acts that go along with porn.” When the term “confessed… vaguely” was used again, my concern (perhaps quite wrong!) was that Dennis might be inclined to make descriptions more graphic, or that he thought more than confession of kind was necessary.
 
I understand the need to be more specific, it’s just that sometimes I just feel embaressed to confess such sins that I normally wouldn’t just tell everyone that I know, so I try to keep it vague but clear. But I’ll definetly talk with a priest about this. So in the mean time should I abstain myself from communion? Thanks again and thanks for all the advice. I appologize for draging this thread out longer then it needed to be. I just try to better myself and to please god.

You do not need to abstain from communion since you didn’t mean to withhold sins (if you even did that at all).
