I don’t know, but I’d be interested in finding out. I knew a couple Sisters of St. Joseph who had them in their office. Apparently, one used to lead retreats for college students that did some “Catholic version” of a Native American prayer. I never went to one of them, but the person who told me about it, said it was a tad strange, especially coming from a white woman.
Sounds just like the Sisters of St. Joseph!!

Blessings to all. I am Bro. Joshua. I really like this forum. The issue on Dream Catchers amazes me that it could go on and on so.

Please do go on and on. I believe that knowing about the love of Manitou which occurred over the course of 10 000 years in NA, would help many folks of European descent to acquire a better sense of ‘home’ than they have now.

There are also many things which folks of European descent would do well to set right by their First Nations brothers. A change in consciousness would be a good start.

I would be very interested to see some threads on First Nations themes and their similarity or relation to Christian themes. Any insights you might have or questions you might wish to pose would be interesting.

God bless you.

And yes… American Indian “religion” and ceremonies would be defined as heresy by the church… you disagree with that?
  1. Please look up ‘heresy’ at vatican.va and post it here.
  2. Please also look up where the Church has defined First Nations religions and ceremonies as ‘heresy’ and post that here.
Thank you.

So much has improved and has gotten better over the years. But, from time to time we are reminded that there is still a lot of work to do. We are God’s children and thus relatives to one another.
Oh Bro. I have been having such a hard time believing this. It just seems like one step forward and ten steps back. Dudley George’sfamily one a victory from the Canadian federal government recently; the gov rescinded any claims made on the land belonging to the George’s tribe. That is a major victory! Now everyone is waiting to see what happens in Caledonia with the standoff there which has been going on for more than a year I believe.

On the other hand, look what is happening to the environment! My friend is on a Green Committee where she lives and the attitutes are just so ungrateful, so disrespectful, so unconscious – it is very very discouraging. And then there is the intergenerational damage which is still going on as a result of the Residential Schools.

I don’t know where to put my feet anymore. I feel like a stranger in a strange land.

First off, the USA is for EVERYONE.
If this is true, then what was the need to herd First Nations people onto reservations? After depriving them of the lands which they inhabited? Hint: because some folks thought that the Americas was for Europeans only, or even more specifically for English, French, Spanish, Portuguese – take your pick.

…I am well versed on my Indigenous ways and I must say these wanna-be folks are extremly off track. They do not have an incling of what they are talking about. They should not take our traditions without permission and without a minimum of 7 years training in these things. Chances are, if they knew the seriousness of what they are doing and the time truly needed to study this – they would end up not have the time for us Native People.
Then it’s a question of values, isn’t it? And gratitude? And respect? How many years do ‘educated’ folks spend learning Greek and Roman culture; European history?

The hyprocrisy is that they claimed the whole continent. Plus none of the indians payed for any land. They just said it was theirs… And as far as I know there were settlers that came through russia into alaska before they even existed…
When?

My My – now that’s an interesting take on history. I hope they are not teaching that in the Churches, CCD or Church history courses these days.

Ugh please. My ancestor was a Cherokee who married a French Catholic and had Catholic children that descend down to me. I have a dream catcher on the opposite wall of my crusifix. I don’t belive it has power, but it’s decoration and it reminds me of my heritage from time to time. My crusifix is blessed and hangs directly over my bed. I’m pretty sure any “evil” in my dream catcher is negated by christ’s power. My mother also hangs dream catchers around our house along with crusifixs. To us it’s mere beauty and decoration.

Eh - what can I say? I try to sound nice and make it sound like thing are improving to give a bit of hope. I used to go to Ipperwash a lot. That shooting story in you link makes me very sad. I just posted a news item on my web site of the racial vandelism commited against the Ktitgan Zibi in Canada – I suppose becasue it was the Eve of Canadian Aboriginal Day.

The violence against Indigenous People is escalating at alarming rates in the past few years. (I suppose this will be justified by several posts before the day is over lisiting bad things some Natives did as well).

Anyway – Chi-migwetch for you good message - (Nin Makatewikonaweg Minwahjimo). For those wondering - that is my name and it gives honor to the Gospel of Jesus our Christ.

Things will start improving when we decide to improve them. For many that has already started. For the rest of us, the next question is how?

Sometimes I think that what happened to FN because of the Residential Schools also happened to the rest of the folks here. That is, that few of us have a clear sense of where we belong. Without that clear sense of where we belong how can we live our lives as moral beings?

ah! cpayne will be happy with my last sentence. Sounds like a topic for a new philosophy thread. We haven’t had one of those for a long while. But that’s another story.

Some folks have given clear inidcation they find not only Dream Catchers Evil, but anything concerning the traditions of the First Nations. I am hereby prompted to include another angle of this converstaion into forum:

Many sport teams, parochial, public school and professional teams use (and misuse) Sacred Native symbols in their team logos and mascots. I have a question to those who are oppossed to dream catchers who also use and/or support the use of Native Symbols in sports?

This question is for those who do both – oppose dream catcher, but enjoy the use of racial images and sacred symbols of native People in sports. I realize the two conditions do not apply to all.

I am very interested to know the criteria to oppose one, but accept the other.

I bumped into a number of Sisters and Brothers who stole these rituals and are making a mockery of the Native Tradition and of the Catholic Faith in general with the silly way they immitate cultures they have limited knowledge of. Most or all of these wanna-bes have no authorization from Tribal sources. Many Natives complain about the cultural slavery and cultural theft of our traditions.

A couple of Religious told me of some obscure “Chief” who gave them the right (or was that rite?). The explanation given me makes it obvious they have no clue what a “chief” is.

Until August 11, 1978 - we had to be careful about pointing these abuses out. Native Americans did not have Religious freedom in this country untill that date. Complaining could have been construed as criminal.

You were speaking about enculturation earlier and I could not remember the name of the Euro-Canadian actor who became a member of a tribe. It took me 2 weeks to remember his first name. Then I knew I had to accidentally bump into Jack Duffy’s wife, Marilyn at the Market to ask what his second name is. That’s what I just did. His full name is Don Franks. He has a daughter, Cree Franks who is an actor in Hollywood now.

I am not certain the reference or who used “enculturation.” My reply is simply to mention there are two words commonly confused: enculturation and inculturation. The latter is not found in many dictionaries, but is used in Vatican II documents a lot. EN-culturation, similar to assimilation, enforces one culture onto another. IN-culturation is used primarily in faith issues. The Gospel can permeate a culture without changing the culture, and vice versa. A sponge can soak up water, but does not become water, or a dolphin - it remains a sponge.

Indigenous culture can absob the Gospel, but the culture does not disappear nor does the Gospel evaporate.
