Hi everyone. Darrell, my boyfriend, and I are in an open relationship so we can date other people while still being boyfriend and girlfriend. Is this sinful? Should we make it a closed relationship? 🤷

Well, this is no longer an issue cause we broke up because it is best for our friendship.

Holly, I’m glad you have settled your situation.

For others who might want to think about the question posed, technically you can date as many people as you want simultaneously until you are married. You have made no binding vow or promise until then. However, I’d say it was at the very least a sin against charity to cheat on a fiance(e) or a boyfriend / girlfriend so serious that engagement is imminent. For those in earlier stages of dating, there is no absolute requirement for exclusivity. In fact, it could be considered unwise, especially for the young.

I know you say it’s not important anymore, but I will add my thoughts just for future reference.

yes it is sinful. Absolutely, no way around it. This whole notion that until you get married you are under no kind of “agreement” or whatever is complete nonsense. When you are in a romantic relationship with someone you absolutely have to be dedicated to that person. I don’t care if you’ve only been dating for a few years or a few weeks, merely by being in a relationship with them requires dedication to that person. Obviously getting married is a much bigger commitment, but without commitment before marriage, you are essentially committing adultery just being with that person, especially if you do anything physical (even kissing would be sinful).

Overall I just don’t get how people can think open relationships are a good idea. They are not just sinful, but they are stupid.

Hmmm, I see that there is disagreement on this issue. I will ask my priest. 👍

John,

Do you think that going on one date with a person requires commitment?

Until there is a mutual agreement to an exclusive relationship there is no problem with dating any number of people as time allows. Once there is an agreement, possibly followed by becoming engaged to be married it is expected that the relationship would be exclusive until such time as it is broken off or marriage occurs. A partner who would date anyone else while in such a relationship would not be sinning, but also would not be a very wise choice for marriage. They aren’t ready or possibly able to engage in a serious relationship.🙂
