Are people everywhere hyper-sexualized? What is normal sexual behavior? I’m not talking sexual preferences here, but the sexual urge, the libido. Look at the problems people on this forum have with masturbation?

Is it ironic that the drug companies do not have any drugs specific to sexual reduction, like they have with sexual enhancement. Luckily, certain anti-depressants act as sexual reduction, like Paxil (which I am on).

It may be tempting to blame hyper-sexuality on the media, but I think the media is just an outcome of the sexual revolution.

The sexual revolution is huge, and began in the 1960s. Parts of the revolution should not be studied without putting things in context with the larger revolution, so I would like to explore hyper-sexuality in contrast to the larger revolution as a whole. Like, what made the revolution take off? Are a rapid increase in sexual urges to blame? Or, was it the media that gave birth to the the increase in sex and the revolution?

I think it’s due to a uniquely modern phenomenon of anxiety which follows from a collective sense of groundlessness, of free floating (Kundera’s unbearable lightness of being). And all this stems from practical atheism. People no longer believe that God is there for them.

This helps us understand better the prayer following the Lord’s prayer in the Mass - where we ask the Lord to protect us from all anxiety. How does He do that? By granting the petitions in the Lord’s prayer.

Being a person who suffers from lifelong anxiety, I find your answer interesting!

If you’re looking for a coherent answer you will need to define your terms a little more clearly. Which revolution are you talking about? The sexual revolution or are you talking about the general reordering of society that began in the 1960s? If you are talking about the sexual revolution when did it begin? Issues of sex and promiscuity have been an issue for ages and you can find the media either wringing their hands about it or reveling in it in many different generations.

Also, your post in one paragraph says you can’t blame hypersexuality on the media and then the very next paragraph you ask the question if the media gave birth to the sexual revolution. One sentence is a conclusion and the next is a question. Does one rule the other out or not?

Why the interest with a pharmaceutical company making drugs that decrease the libido? Does it need decreased? Or perhaps do people need to re-order their thinking on sexuality and get it focused on the things that God intended it to be focused on, such as a single partner in a committed, life-long, married relationship. With both spouses looking towards God and each other the parts of a sex life that mine to prone to excess could be held in check or channeled to an outlet that is acceptable to each partner and more pleasing towards God.

I don’t think we need drugs to decrease the libido, but it most definitely does not need to be increased. All these old men who should not be having sex anyway, taking a drug to get an erection! It’s goofy, and I’m sure most of the wives don’t want it either. After a certain age, the libido slows down.

As for younger people, there is much too much porn in the world. Even normal advertising hovers on being pornographic. People need to learn to practice chastity, especially before marriage, and be proud of being chaste, not ashamed!

My libido was so intense that simply walking down the street would result in an erection and near ejaculation. I’m forever grateful for Paxil. Why not offer a drug that decreases libido so those who need it can obtain it?

My post in the one paragraph is my personal belief. My statement in the next paragraph simply raises the question for discussion.

Why shouldn’t old people be having sex and why are you assuming the wives don’t want it either? I understand that libidos decrease as we age, but treating erectile dysfunction and the libido are two different things, to some couples (the women included) having a drug could be something that puts a missing dimension or expression of their love back into their relationship that they might have both been missing. Instead of seeing it as something that’s goofy, maybe it’s something that is helpful.

Okay, then no the media did not give rise to hyper-sexuality or the sexual revolution.

The media was certainly a large factor in the sexual revolution; it gave people “permission” to have sex and dress and act provocatively. But it was still the hyper-active libido that gave rise to the sexual revolution.

Once a woman goes through menopause, her sex drive just naturally goes down, because she is no longer fertile.

As for older men, their sex drive obviously goes down too, physically, but unfortunately in their minds some still see themselves as young studs. The media and drugs do not help this situation.

Mature people can still express their love for each other non-sexually. Their child-bearing years are over, so they should think about other ways to express love as a couple.

The media just feeds on what people want to see and they want to see sex and things that remind them of sex because society is all about what is supposed to be naughty for us and the media will do anything to make a dime.

People like me like to be fed the truth, but the media is just a bunch of lies! The media is meant to control and guide the culture. I see it as national security!

Given my readings from throughout history I sincerely doubt that what we are seeing is anything new. Sex has been a huge pull throughout the millennia. Satan is attacking this intimate act between husband and wife since its inception.

And this is an example of an observation - not irony. 👍

Freud once estimated that normal sex urge should arise to have sex about once a week, but my sexual urges, prior to the Paxil, was to have sex about five times a day! After the Paxil I’m completely abstinent. It would be interesting if more guys would step forward and reveal their sex urges!

I think the increase in promiscuity is due to effective contraception and abortion. These innovations both enable and encourage sexual sin.

Oh, abortion, pornography, contraception, rape, incest, sodomy, fornication, sexualized media… it’s ALL connected. Everyone knows it ,and they’re just too proud to put 2 and 2 together to see all the evil it’s all causing.

WHat’s really interesting is to read about what used to go on int he Roman Empire, or even during the middle ages with monarchies and the aristocracy. If people think the depravity and frequency is common only in this age - they are making a serious error!

Indeed, read Suetonius’ “Lives of the Caesars.” It’s part tabloid and part history. Those Caesars took debauchery and excess to a whole new level.
