It’s emotional thinking. It reminds me of the article “The Coddling of the American Mind.”
I am offended that you find this thread offensive. It was my right to post how offensive it was first. :hey_bud:
Funny, but also true. I think many people get offended as a defense mechanism for dealing with issues. The best defense is a good offense!
True. Or as a justification for their unreasonable, defensive behavior.Funny, but also true. I think many people get offended as a defense mechanism for dealing with issues.
And what is key, it is starting young, there is an ever increasing lack of discipline in school, and the bullies continue. What I learned from my talk I give in October is that the sensitive child’s feeling should be handled first. Second, the school should then deal with the reasonings behind the bullying. What should not happen is for sensitive kids to “toughen-up” and for the bully to “knock it off.” The sensitive child may have a background that makes it tough to change and the bully may be going trough difficult times at home–verbal/physical abuse, parental divorce, family discord, etc.I have always been sensitive. What’s changed is that I was taught that my being sensitive is generally my issue, not someone else’s. There’s a balance. Unless someone steps over certain bounds, I was taught to try to ignore things that offend me.
One thing that greatly offends me is “Drag Queens” on stage as entertainment. It hits me as a mockery of womanhood. It feels to me like a form of “blackface”, except society no longer tolerates white people made up with black-face on stage. Men acting as caricatures of women is highly offensive to me–and I believe anyone who is not offended by it is insensitive. While it offends me deeply and while I wish it would stop, I don’t file lawsuits nor do I stage demonstrations against this offensive behavior.
People who take offense these days sometimes file lawsuits or organize demonstrations against whoever or whatever offended them. Bullies are fought against–and in turn, bullies use these same methods to fight against things by claiming that things they don’t like are “offensive”. I find that offensive too! The bullies have turned the tables and are now using “sensitivity” as a weapon!
No one rewarded me for being sensitive when I was growing up. Now, people are not only rewarded, but insensitive bullies (using methods and courts that were designed to protect the weak from abuse) to foist their offensiveness on the rest of us. I’m not being oversensitive when I say that’s offensive.
Follow the money.Yes, there’s a huge contingent of SOPOs (Society of the Perpetually Offended) who seem to look for an excuse to take offense, then use that as justification to vilify, verbally abuse and shout down anyone they disagree with.
