Are photographers and videographers allowed at mass?

My fiance wants pitures and videos of our wedding specifically during the mass/wedding ceremony. I don’t want to split anybody’s attention from God by giving them such a task during mass. Is it even allowed? If so, why? I really don’t want to be the cause of someone’s focus being removed from God during mass.

Yes - happens all the time. Usually, those folks are used to it and consider it part of their ministry; they can manage to pray and operate the camera or they’ll attend Mass another time if they so choose. The only stipulation is that they should be as unnoticeable as possible and not disrupt anything.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! 🌷

As others have written above, contact your priest and the parish and confirm with them. Usually it is completely acceptable as long as certain parameters are followed, e.g. staying a certain distance away from the altar so that the congregation can see the priest.

The weddings I’ve went to hired photographers from secular businesses. So I don’t think there was that concern because they wouldn’t be participating in the Mass

That would just make me feel worse. “Oh, you don’t care about God? I’ll invite you to His house so you can just take pictures of me.”

I think you realize this is all just perspective.

The photographer might be respectful towards the faith. Maybe in the Mass, he’ll experience God’s love through your relationship with your fiance. Or the Eucharist.

At the end of the day, it’s your choice. Maybe you can share your concerns with your priest. I’m sure he can reassure you that having photographers would not be a bad thing at all

Thank you. Thinking about this made me consider that maybe taking pictures is no more of a distraction from mass and God than singing in the choir. It could be just another way to engage the mass and serve in the mass, by capturing moments of it to look back on.
