Are Priest decisions absolute?

Are Priests decisions absolute ie can allow divorce even if it is against Church teatching for example or their decisons must be within Church teaching .

Divorce is a civil matter. A priest does not “allow” or “disallow” divorce. An individual may choose to divorce their spouse, but it has no bearing on the status on their marriage in the eyes of the Church.

Hey Pete. This is the trouble with taking Scripture out of context and putting a literal read on a stand alone section.

What Christ is talking about are binding and loosing *sins, *not secular matters (e.g. a Priest cannot “bind” you to marry a specific person or donate a specific sum to the Church, but he can “bind” you and not give you absolution if he beleives you are not sincere and with a firm purpose of amendment in confession).

A Priest must always follow the doctrine and teachings of the Church and no teaching on faith or morals can ever violate that. There are matters where they can give you their opinions and counsel, however these too must be in line with general Church teaching (unfortunately, some are not, but that is another thread ).

And in terms of “allowing divorce”…see the Catechism of the Catholic Church. One must distinguish between the grave evil of divorce and potential sin…and the legit civil measures when needed for the purpose of say the care of children etc.(see the section there scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s2c2a6.htm#IV).

No. A priest’s authority with regards to individual acts is legitimate only insofar as it accords with those truths revealed by God and Tradition.
