Anglican priests ordained by Kings or Queens of England? I don’t think so–where did you hear that…
Didn’t Henry VIII pick his Archbishop of Canterbury?

I guess there are two questions here, really:
  1. Who chose the first archbishops of the Anglican Church following Henry VIII’s excommunication?
  2. Is this the same practice today? If not, when was the last archbishop chosen “the original way” implied in question 1?

Here’s what Wikipedia says:

**Since Henry VIII broke with Rome, the Archbishops of Canterbury have been selected by the English (latterly British) monarch. **Today the choice is made in the name of the Sovereign by the prime minister, from a shortlist of two selected by an ad-hoc committee called the Crown Nominations Commission. As the current archbishop, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr Rowan Douglas Williams, the 104th Lord Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of All England was enthroned at Canterbury Cathedral on 27 February 2003; he signs himself Rowan Cantuar. He was previously Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Monmouth.

So it would seem that this position was in fact one filled by the King or Queen of England after Henry VIII’s excommunication.

I don’t think that all protestants are anti-Catholic. However there are quite many who are.

Just think of this. Most evangelicals or fundamentalists think that they are saved and Catholics are not. Most of them say they are “Christians” as opposed to Catholics who are not. Isn’t that blatant anti-Catholicism?

Maybe anti-Catholicism, but not anti-Catholic. I think that Mormons aren’t Christians, but I’m not anti-Mormon. I’d still hire a mormon, speak with one, be a friend to one, etc. However, I probably could be called anti-mormonism because I think their set of doctrines is totally non-Christian, and don’t hold their Baptism to be valid.

A distinction without much difference, I’m afraid, if one believes Mormons to be damned. I’d say it certainly is anti-Mormon to allow them to persist in their lack of salvation without even trying to put in a good word for the “correct” path. Evangelicals evangelize, right? If they don’t try to evangelize the Mormon, in your example, they must REALLY hate them.

Believing that Catholics are damned if they do not cease and desist to be Catholic is a pretty good definition of anti-Catholic. Otherwise, what’s left for anti-Catholic to mean? Snubbing?

Oh, yes it would be anti-Mormon to not evangelize to a Mormom when give the opportunity. I wasn’t saying that Mormons shouldn’t be evangelized.

To clarify, when one says anti-Catholic or anti-protestant or anti-buddhist, I immediately think of the common usage of the term which means to act in a bigoted or prejudicial way against the members of that group simply because they are of that group. So, if I wouldn’t hire someone simply because they are Mormon, I’d be anti-Mormon.

To simply oppose the doctrine of a certain group does not necessarily prejudice you against the individual members. I am anti-Mormon doctrine, but the fact that an individual is Mormon does not prejudice me against him.

So, groups like the old Know Nothing party are Anti-Catholic, as well as anyone who treats Catholics in a degrading or prejudicial way simply due to their faith. Also, those who knowingly and maliciously spread falsehoods about the faith are acting in an anti-Catholic way.

Someone like James White, to the best of my knowledge, is not anti-Catholic, but simply opposes Catholic doctrine rather vocally.

Now, I know some here use the term anti-Catholic in a different sort of way and apply it to fellas like James White. To me, this seems a waste of time and an exercise in semantics.

Just my thoughts. 🙂

I agree with your post. I dont know James White but Ill take your word for it.

I dont believe ALL catholic doctrine is correct and I do evangelize to catholics(actually I will evangelize to anyone who will listen and I dont personally seek out catholics either–just take whoever God puts in my path). 😛 But, I have to say these are usually catholics in name only(dont go to church etc) and really dont have a clue about the gospel of Jesus Christ:shrug: So I just preach the gospel and if then they go back to the CC–well glory be to God!! AMEN!! If they come to my church then Glroy be to God!! AMEN!!
I dont look at people as far as which church they go to. I want to know if they know the Gospel of Christ. If they do–:extrahappy: If they dont then I have the joy to tell them the Good News:extrahappy: and in doing so Glorifying God in the process.👍
Either way–the Gospel has been taught:thumbsup: They have been served;)
