Are Protestants being hypocrites?

Protestants are famous for disagreeing with Catholic teaching because “It’s not in the Bible.” Anything that isn’t mentioned in the Bible is rejected. Purgatory, the Immaculate Conception, prayer to Saints… etc. The Catholic Church its self is rejected because “It’s not in the Bible.”

But lately it has come to my attention that alot of Protestants accept women as Priests/Pastors. My own former Protestant Church once had a woman guest Pastor preach on sunday. And on another (non-religious) messageboard I participate in there is a thread for Christian fellowship were when recently polled most participants agreed that women pastors are perfectly fine (even encouraged). It was mostly the Catholics in the thread who dissented. (I say mostly because I am not certain of the results, but I don’t remember any non Catholics being against it.)

Now it occurs to me that perhaps these Protestants are being hypocritical. After all, not only are female Priests/Pastors not found anywhere in the Bible, but Paul gives explicit instructions that women are to be silent in Church.

So why do Protestants accept this?
In my experience, TRUE sola scriptura evangelicals would NOT permit a woman pastor/teacher, based on the scripture that a woman is to be subject and to not be in a teaching authority over man.

oh yea jesus told peter you are my kefaw which means rock and on this kefaw i buid MY church but i guess protestants who are so scripture masters lol jk dont read this and when our savior repeated himself more than anything was repeated in the bible. i am the bread that came down from heavenif any man shall eat this bread he shall live forever just read john chapter 6 see how clear he tries to make it that that was his true body and blood but most protestants if you ask them about this most of them will say they have never studied this or james only john 3:16 it crazy
Kyle,
If you want your posts to be read and taken seriously, you will need to write in standard English, not as if you are texting… I say this, because I can see that you do have some substance in what you are writing…Just saying.

“You keep saying that word … I don’t tink it means what you tink it means.”
–I. Montoya, 1987

Pace the OP’s earlier, allegedly restrictive definition of the word, it scarcely fits here. Hypocrisy is not a simple failure through weakness to practice what one preaches. Hypocrisy is not an unnoticed contradiction in the tenets by which one lives or worships.

Hypocrisy might be, say, if Protestant preachers and theologians privately disbelieved in sola scriptura, considering it something useful to keep the rubes in line, but not something sensible men like us need adhere to in practice. However, the fact that there’s a seeming contradiction between female ordination and Protestant stances on Biblical hermeneutics doesn’t qualify you to toss that word around lightly.

Maybe the churches or organizations involved haven’t thought it out very rigidly. Maybe they have revelatory reasons like some of the Pietists mentioned above, reasons that you might think silly but that exist. Maybe they think the lady’s denomination is out to lunch on female preachers, but don’t consider it a very weighty issue–unlike a few CAF posters, who burst a vessel if their priest wears the wrong-colored [whatever it’s called] on the wrong Sunday, many Protestants are so casual or oblique w/r/t ecclesiological issues that the sex of their preacher doesn’t seem like a hill to die on.

Any of these seems considerably likelier than the hypocrisy option, so I’m a little surprised it’s the one possibility you’ve rushed to.

I don’t think that is true. The church I came from was a non denominational very Bible based church and they were perfectly fine having a woman pastor from another church come speak to them. (It made me extremely uncomfortable, years before I decided to become Catholic.)

And in the Christian thread on the other messageboard I frequent, there are a variety of denominations represented. There is a very outspoken Baptist minister there who also taught that it was a fine and good thing. Almost everyone there was ok with it, except the Catholics.

This seems to be more widespread that I originally thought.
as far as i know every christian denomination have women as pastores. in many churches the wives of the pastores suddenly becomes pastores too. go figure.
believe me attempts have been made in the CC for women priests.

can you name a denomination that does not have women pastores?

“So why do Protestants accept this”

It’s apostacy on a whole. It’s not just this denomination is right or that one is, It’s global apostacy. Protestant churches allowing women as pastors is the least of it. God said there would be a great falling away before the man of sin is revealed.

2Ti 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

amish and mennonite

oh, and they do cover their heads (at least the amish do. and the most conservative branches of mennonites too)
i dont know much about these groups or what they believe. thanks.

i dont know if allowing is the right word here. they have no control over it. since Martin Luther preached the Bible and me, it is up to the person to decide what he or she wants to do with it. is it not? they have no authority because that is what they teach. this only proves that Jesus has only One Church. One with authority so no man can do whatever he wants with His Word. St Peter said: the ignorant distort Scriptures to their own distraction. i think we can see exactly that before and today.

The problem with this formulation is an inaccurate understanding of Apostasy. In order to apostasize, one must have embraced the truth. Most of these ecclesial communities were never in unity with the Apostolic Faith in the first place. All those communities created out of the Reformation, based upon the error of sola scriptura, have departed from the Teaching of the Apostles to a greater or lesser degree. The are not “evil men”, as they are doing the best they can with what they have, but they started with incomplete revelation in the first place.

oh my goodness yes they are hypocryts they say faiith saves alone uh read james 2:16-22. ohwell if faith saves alone wait wait wait wait just a moment that means if i believe that jesus is our savior i will be saved ? well satan himself believes that so do all the devils so why arent they saved ? hmmmmm? i wonder and thats not the only thing they are i could writs 10000000000 word essay on it
This argument should be laid to rest, go to this thread

As long as the Roman Catholic Church continues to assert its own authority and bind its people to “another gospel,” it is the spiritual duty of all true Christians to oppose Roman Catholic doctrine with biblical truth and to call all Catholics to true salvation. Meanwhile, evangelicals must not capitulate to the pressures for artificial unity. They cannot allow the gospel to be obscured, and they cannot make friends with false religion, lest they become partakers in their evil deeds (2 John 11).

Good points. No honest Catholic would call Protestants evil. There are many sincere christians within Protestantism who just dont know any better.

and i assume you have the authority to determine that the CC preaches another Gospel, right? so, you say, that the Church has no authority but you are the authority.

do you know the history of your belief system? when did it started? do you know? and by whom?

Mike, I cannot see what your reply has to do with my post. You seem to be grinding a strong anti-catholic agenda here. Perhaps your resentment against the Catholic Church is so strong you have trouble staying on topic?

My point is that society cannot be charged with “apostasy” as you have suggested. In order to be apostate, one must first have adhered to the faith. This is not the case for the majority of America today.

I think that Mike believes he is authorized by God Himself. 😉

Mike, the Catholic Church is not “Roman”. This is a prejudice that you reflect each time you assert as such by using this phrase. It demonstrates you to be ignorant of the nature of Catholicism. Don’t feel bad. Most American Catholics don’t know it either. The Latin Rite is the most common in Western Europe and America. The authority given to the Church, like all authority, comes from God, and not “itself”.

Titus 2:15
15 Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

This is the Apostolic command to the bishops.

Please show us where the Bible states that “it is the spiritual duty of all true Christians to oppose Roman Catholic doctrine”.

You have indicated here that you believe Catholics do not have “true salvation”. This statement also reflects an ignorance of what the Catholic Church believes and teaches. I wonder why you believe this?

If you believe that Catholicism is a “false religion” then why are you posting on a Catholic forum? If you are here to oppose the Church and to convert Catholics, you are in the wrong place. CAF is here to answer questions and have dialogue about the Catholic faith, not to provide you with a venue to air your prejudices and ignorance. If you want to correct your misconceptions about the Catholic faith, you have come to the right place.

It’s a different Gospel than what Protestantism preaches, for sure - but it is, in fact, the original Gospel. It is the Protestants who have departed, and who have created, not just one, but many, “other gospels.”

I believe that all human beings have hypocrisy inside of them; some are just more willing to admit it!
