It seems some Roman Catholics are over-sensitive and very aggressive when discussing Christianity with non-Catholic Christians. Truth belongs to God and not a particular Christian community. What do you think?

:onpatrol:

Truth belongs to God, and He entrusted the Catholic Church with safeguarding the Truth. So you’re wrong, the fullness of the Truth does belong to a specific community, the Catholic Church.

If you ask me, we aren’t nearly sensitive enough. This online community is not representative of the majority of Catholics who are very apathetic and hardly attend Church.

I don’t feel that Catholics are oversensitive, but I do think that they are the most maligned among Christian denominations. There is some pretty outlandish anti-Catholic propaganda out there that simply doesn’t exist for non-Catholic Christian denominations. The perpetual defense mode that results from having to constantly clear this stuff up definitely factors into any perceived oversensitivity. For example, when I have to explain for the 152nd time (and 25th time to the same person) that Catholics don’t worship Mary, I may come off as just a little bit oversensitive…

Was that your question?

Depends on the Catholic.

In general, I’d say too many of them are too quick to condemn people and have no reasoning behind it, but you could say the same about Protestants.

Really, its all about the individual.

Maybe on this one forum there are Catholics who are can oversensitive and overbearing, but in real life I would say that most Catholics are not aggressive enough when faced with challenges to their faith.

In reality, and in everyday life…the vast majority of Catholics are a pretty “passive” lot. Catholics tend to endure, and not respond to slurs and such. Its nothing new to us. Frankly…if we were half as aggressive as other people…we would still be “laid back” in general.

The people that you find here on this site and some others that defend the Catholic faith…are the more outspoken, vociferous ones if you will.

Yes, we can be defensive, and can even be aggressive, however, when one considers who we are defensive and aggressive with, its rather easy to see why. Having to redundantly and repetitively explain to non-Catholics their misunderstandings…and often to the same persons ad nauseum, is sad.

I, like many Catholics have no need to defend myself or my faith. I am a Catholic, and I believe as a Catholic, and in turn have little or no concern about what others think of my beliefs. I will willingly explain my beliefs, and whether or not a non-Catholic accepts my beliefs is up to them. Whether or not they understand them is up to them. I do however tend to take umbrage at those who criticize the Church and do so wrongly, regardless if out of ignorance or willfulness.

Bottom line: If I had a nickel for every anti-non-Catholic website owned by a Catholic I couldn’t buy a happy meal at MickeyD’s, in fact I’d be hard pressed to manage to buy a gumball out of a machine!

On the other hand, if I had a penny for every anti-Catholic website owned by a non-Catholic, I could most probably eat high on the hog for a month or more!

The OP’s question contains “untruth”. I wonder if he or she can figure out where?😃

Actually, the better questions would be: **Why are so many non-Catholics so worried, incensed, over-wrought, and even crazed over what Catholics believe? And why do they seem to think they have a righteous duty to set us straight about God? ** Seems like an awful lot of them spend an inordinate amount of time on this site trying to do just that.

Catholics pretty much only act aggressive on CAF. The anonymity of the Internet must contribute to it.

I think passion is good. Christians are commanded to proclaim and defend the gospel. Eternal matters are significantly more important than all temporal matters. It’s tough to participate on another Christian community’s site when we have vastly different ideas on Christianity. What puzzles me is that only the Orthodox and Catholic Churches claim to be the One True Church… with fullness of truth. I’m amazed that any Christian could even think that their particular church has the fullness of truth. God is infinite in wisdom, beyond each one of us to be able to understand Him in full. We all see dimly in this life. We can all read this biblical passage and believe we are obeying God.

Jude 1:3

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

depends on the individual. but many Catholics are not over sensitive or over aggressive because many are not well grounded in their Catholic faith. as a result they easily become victims of false religion. you’re right that truth belongs to God but don’t forget Jesus entrusted his authority to peter who is the Catholic Church first pope. God bless.

Truth is for all though and how could anyone pertain to Truth when there is no one stiff enough to challenge those who claim to false ideaologies?

do you believe in what Jesus said in John 6:53ff? “Truly I say unto you that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood there is no life in you. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is food indeed and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.” many of his disciples who heard him say this left because they would not believe. Jesus did not call them back, and even asked his apostles if they wanted to leave too. of course they did not and affirmed that they believe, except for one. guess who? judas iscariot, the one who betrayed Jesus. now my second question is where can we partake of Jesus’ body and blood? in Orthodox and Catholic Church. that’s why they have the fullness of truth.
God bless.

a sad truth my friend

actually I have been turned off by the holier than thou triumphalism attitudes and lack of Christian brotherhood I see displayed at CAF by many here,I came here because I HAD RESPECT for Roman Catholicism and have been interested in possible conversion, but the smugness and arrogance that Catholics have all the truth about God( as if anyone can) and that everyone else is wrong has turned me away from not towards Catholicism.I think I,LL stick with Anglicanism where reason and questioning aren,t discouraged, but embraced. Go well.

Sounds about like what happened to me, except I am a Baptist. I really just like something about Catholocism, I also like some things about Islam and Buddhism (one major thing is devotion).

Will you pleeeeaaasssseeeeeee stop doing that !!!

Everytime I see that guy I get the giggles 😃

Oversensitive - actually Im stunned at the placid, stoical way in which catholics absorb and turn the other cheek in the face of such anti catholic vitrole on the internet and yet seem to never cease loving the person and hating the sin and correcting the errors in all kindness and charity.

Would I could be as good as some of the people here one day 😊

I think passion is good.
Is it also good to stir that passion, for whatever reasons?
Christians are commanded to proclaim and defend the gospel.
Are Christians who believe differently commanded to go against another’s faith with a lack of charity in order to make them defend the gospel as they believe it?
Eternal matters are significantly more important than all temporal matters.
Php 2:12 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, (as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only but much more now in my absence) with fear and trembling work out your salvation.
It’s tough to participate on another Christian community’s site when we have vastly different ideas on Christianity.
It depends on the intended purpose of the person participating.
What puzzles me is that only the Orthodox and Catholic Churches claim to be the One True Church… with fullness of truth.
Christ had many ways to make as much truth, as man’s comprehension will allow, known to each of us. From there it’s up to each of us as to how we use the truth, or in some cases abuse the truth.

Christ was God. Christ started the Church and gave the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven to Peter. He confirmed this with his words, “And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.”

St. Peter appointed St. Ignatius who wrote, “Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.”

The Orthodox do not doubt what is written above, nor that there was one Church. We were one Catholic Church until the great schism of 1054. They both share many doctrines and beliefs, different from the many doctrines that have come with the reformation of the 1500s and much later. So between the two, that some continue to use as an example to show a divide thinking it will benefit their agenda, they both believe Christ’s Church has existed for 2000 years.
I’m amazed that any Christian could even think that their particular church has the fullness of truth.
To be a part of the Apostolic Church which includes the traditions passed through time, as well as the scriptures is closer to the fullness of truth than any Church born from the reformation, in my opinion. Even though they are not scriptures, we have the writings of the early Church fathers to tell us how Christianity was practiced, as taught to them by the Apostles themselves.
God is infinite in wisdom, beyond each one of us to be able to understand Him in full.
This is true. Still in all people challenge that wisdom with their own personal beliefs and proclaim other Christian Churchs false as if they understand God’s wisdom more fully than a 2000 year old Church or anyone else. This being derived from private interpretations of scriptures.

There are many Churchs in the world today, all with different doctrines based on individual interpretations of scriptures. Each claiming to have the truth. How can many different truths exist?

Do you realize the irony I see discussing truth with some on these forums?
We all see dimly in this life.
You believe we all see dimly, yet you constantly speak against another’s belief with surety.
We can all read this biblical passage and believe we are obeying God.
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.
Again, with the many interpretations in the world today, how do you purpose we know which one is the truth? Many Protestants say the Holy Spirit guides them, yet many disagree on the interpretations, evident by the different doctrines they follow. Is this being of the same mind and judgment?

1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

What do scriptures say about those who speak as if the differences are acceptable?

Rom 16:17 I appeal to you, brethren, to take note of those who create dissensions and difficulties, in opposition to the doctrine which you have been taught; avoid them.

You speak as if there’s something wrong with Catholics, or Orthodox, claiming to have the fullness of truth, as best as man can comprehend. Does your Church not believe it is following truth the same? Do you have doubts and therefore have to come and see if you can shake others in their belief, to somehow test their truth?

Sharing faith and beliefs is one thing. Telling another what they believe instead of listening to what they really believe is another, just as is telling another that there beliefs are wrong and false in a less than charitable way. I feel you can tell Christians by how they share their love of Christ.

Joh 13:35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.

I don’t think it is a sign of hyper-sensitivity. It’s a sign of religious and spiritual insecurity - kind of an inferiority complex. Those that are insecure in their faith lambast others’ faith and denigrate and marginalize their religious beliefs in a sad attempt to elevate their own.

Actually, I just stated the opposite. Those insecure about their faith come here and try to shake those who believe the truth, as if one of us were to fall, then those who came here feels maybe they are justified with what they believe. 😛

God Bless,
