Are homosexual romantic relationships moral or immoral? I believe they are immoral and the reason why is that the purpose of dating is to find a marriage partner. Since a homosexual is only attracted to people of the same sex then they would only want to marry a same sex partner. However, “gay marriage” is not, never has been, and never will be valid in the eyes of the Church. Therefore, since it is impossible for a homosexual to marry someone they are attracted to unless they change their sexual orientation to where they are attracted to the opposite sex then they should not date because the purpose of dating is to find a marriage partner. So, what do you all think about my argument against romantic homosexual relationships? Is it a sound argument or not? What does the Church say? Are romantic homosexual relationships moral or immoral? Or maybe the Church hasn’t officially taken a stance on the issue? If the Church has not taken a stance on the issue, what do you think the Church’s stance would be based upon existing doctrine if they were to have a stance on the issue?

Oh by the way, I am talking about homosexuals who date other homosexuals chastely.

Pretty good argument, methinks.

Homosexual “dating” is pretty much a means to an end, isn’t it?

What’s the point of dating. Two men can go eat together or go to a movie together with no problem. Why use the word ‘date.’

This will lead to sin. Therefore, it is a near occasion of sin and immoral.

As we teach in our Religious Education classes to 13 year old children, dating is to find a spouse. You’re too young to date, because you aren’t looking to get married. If it’s truly a chaste relationship, with no intent for marriage, then it’s a friendship. Two people of any perceived orientation, or lack thereof, can be best friends if they so choose. But dating as said above, is a means to an end. I don’t think ANYONE should date without the intent to find a spouse.

Romantic friendship which is a kin to romance is a wonderful thing. Romantic friendship shares the depth of love in romance, but lacks the sexual element. As a result of this lack the bonds are forged much stronger for there is a lack of hormones to gloss over cracks necessitating a deeper and far more intimate relationship. You fundamentally misunderstand, it’s not about “marriage” it’s about a deep intimate connection with another. There was something that shared many parallels with marriage in both exchange of objects, similar vows, living together etc., but it lacked the crucial element of sex for it to be marriage. That said there was an element of physicality to it.
Discourse on Friendship:
For as an eye that dwells long upon a star must be refreshed with lesser beauties and strengthened with greens and looking-glasses, lest the sight become amazed with too great a splendour; so must the love of friends sometimes be refreshed with material and low caresses; lest by striving to be too divine it become less humane: it must be allowed its share of both.
So the answer is not immoral and could reap charisms of the Holy Spirit, because it’s an entirely different animal. If you want more info I have some books and ballads about friendship to recommend.

The entire concept of a romantic friendship is a difficult one for me to fathom. Maybe it’s from my upbringing here in the west, but the thought that two people can kiss, cuddle, and sleep together and only be ‘friends’ is a difficult one for me. I know for sure that my wife would not consider it such if I were to kiss, cuddle, hold hands and sleep with another woman. I just find the entire concept… a difficult one.

I blame Freud and Wilde. Freud for sexualizing everything including a child’s relationship with his mother and Wilde and his cohorts for making men hide their love for another man lest they be thought sodomites. I’d say the death of Newman signalled the final knell for men with emotions.

Immoral.

That link doesn’t answer the question the OP asked. The OP is not asking about how we should love and respect homosexuals.

A romantic homosexual relationship is immoral.
Actually, the link I posted argues just the opposite and seeks to include committed, loving gay relationships with biblical support for the author’s position. I encourage you to read the article and understand the etymology of the original biblical texts.

the phrase “romantic homosexual relationship” is too loaded, but assuming ordinary meanings, I would say immoral. There is no point to such a relationship–friendship, yes; absolutely. but not a romance, which implies a sexual love.

Dakota has mentioned romantic friendships, and I would suggest caution. First, the basis for such “romantic friendships” is a couple of poorly crafted ballads from medieval ages; ballads which were not considered good literature in their day or in the periods following. Second, the concept as applied to those ballads was coined by a professor who was also an active homosexual. It is my experience that part of the homosexual intelligentsia’s agenda is to look back in history and find homosexuals and homosexuality where it did not exist.

For most young men, and that is most of the posters on these issues, what is described as a “romantic friendship” would be nothing short of a near occasion of sin. For heaven’s sake, would anyone advise a 20 something heterosexual male to behave in such a way with a “just friends” female?! It would be inviting error.

Close friendships can and do exist, one need only look to the Saints for examples of both same sex and opposite sex friends. however, they were friendships steeped in Christ’s love and in a deep and mature prayer life. But there were no sexual overtones and one is doing violence to their stories and memories to create such.

This is an area where I would suggest again that one who suffers with same sex attraction avoid and, in fact, decry the **label ** “homosexual”. A ***person ***has friendships and relationships, not an identity and certainly not a disordered identity.

I agree with what seems to be the majority view here that it is immoral for a homosexual to have a romantic relationship with another person of the same sex. As for the person who said that “romantic” implies a sexual relationship, that is not what I meant. I am asking if a chaste homosexual romantic relationship is moral or immoral. I think they are immoral.

lolwut?

The “author” you appear to be talking about would be John Boswell (a sodomite who sodomized history and language to try to fabricate evidence for religious “gay marriages” in the Middle Ages and died of AIDS complications…) who I hate with a passion, the author I have been using is Alan Bray whose book The Friend actually eviscerates Boswell’s argument without mentioning it. I would like to point out that sworn brotherhood and romantic friendship are actually two different things, Bray covers the former not the latter. You may find it beneficial to read Jeremy Taylor’s Discourse of the Nature, Offices and Measures of Friendship (1657) concerning friendship for the latter (although it is not called romantic friendship). Bray was actually very careful to avoid saying that the people were gay or homosexual or implying such, much to the LGBT community’s chagrin.

The romantic friendships I’m talking about lack the sexual element and mostly it was women not men in these relationships.

Of course such a friendship today would need to be driven by agape love for another to allow both to flourish in the light of the Holy Spirit.

If you use the word “romantic” about homosexuals then it is immoral.
