Are rosary beeds meant to be worn or held?

i feel so funny asking this…i see many nuns and holy figures hold their rosary beeds.
then i walk into the tattoo shop i go to and there is this one artist in there whose into the whole mexican “cholo” (gangsta) thing and he wears his rosary beeds as a necklace (not fancy diamond rapper like necklace, just a regular wooden beeded rosary necklace).

are you supposed to wear rosary beeds on your neck?

I think it is a matter of choice, but I contend that to wear a rosary around one’s neck is rather sacriligious. But that’s just me. Also, the problem I have with doing this is that unfortunately it has become a ‘fashion,’ whereby even nonCatholics or even those who don’t even practice a religion do it just because it’s the ‘in’ thing to do. It is also worn by gangs. These people have no interest on its history, or what it is for…it’s quite sad.
 
I think they are simply meant to be held, but I know of several men that wear them under their shirts. I don’t because mine is to long. It would get caught at the belt line & probably break from bending & sitting. There aren’t any rules. And if there were, I’d have to respond with “tell that to the Catholic soldiers.” 😃
 
It’s one of those things that what’s in the heart makes a big difference.

True, many people wear rosaries around their necks simply to make a fashion statement–or worse.

And there are many whoe wear them as a sign and act of faith.

Charity requires that I assume (in the absence of evidence to the contrary) that all are doing so for pious reasons.
 
i would wear mine under my shirt.

btw the tattoo artist i was talking about wears it because his mother always wore hers and she gave it to him.
 
Not as though I am qualified to answer but I would say that having them with you can never be a bad thing whether or not you carry or wear

No you are supposed to pray with them…They aren’t a piece of jewelry
 
Some religious have long rosary beads that they wear around their waists.
 
I wish I could find the article by Fr Pacwa…he states that rosaries shouldn’t be worn as a necklace…They are not the same thing as a medal, which is supposed to be worn around the neck

There are exceptions like ill people in a hospital that can’t hold on to it or keep track of it…soldiers in combat…things like this

According to Fr Pacwa the rosary isn’t something that people should just treat as they like ,saying I bought it ,it is mine, I will do as I please with it

I even saw one dippy guy dancing with one around his neck on TV…that is sacrilegious…just as you wouldn’t desecrate others holy items, neither should ours be

If any of you have this rock magazine it might be in there …not sure what issue
 
This is very much a cultural thing. We don’t often see people wearing their rosary in Canada (or, I assume, the US). OTOH, my friend who volunteers in Guatemala a lot says that it’s a pious practice down there. Apparently it’s also common to do so in Mexico.

My mom used to tell of their holiday travels with my aunt. They said the rosary morning and afternoon on the drive, each person taking turns leading it. One day when it was my aunt’s turn she slipped the rosary around her neck when they were finished, just to keep it safe until they stopped. They were all amused to notice she was still wearing it when they sat at the restaurant for lunch.
 
I have seen on other posts that it is alright to wear them and the web site that I purchased one of mine from actualy described them as being made to wear. However I am very rough on my rosaries and they keep breaking (I must be praying to hard) so I think I will not be wearing them.

On a side note is it normal for me to be going through a rosary every 8-10 weeks?? This could get expensive. :confused:

Perhaps you need to invest in one of those somewhat extra expensive ultra durable custom made rosaries. 🤷 😃

Or a relatively inexpensive cord rosary with wooden beads. I’ve had mine for about a year now, and I walk with it, stuff it in my purse, and sleep with it. The cord’s a little frayed, but other than that it’s holding up well. It’s not very pretty or anything, but it’s tough. 😃
 
I can’t recall from wear but there is an indulgence for wearing the Rosary.

Woah! He has mama’s rosary. THAT is SO cool :extrahappy: I was lucky enough to have a Catholic tattoo artist as well.
 
A number of years ago my family was attending a Marian Conference. Two of my boys were with a group of teenagers and were making to rounds of the vendors tables. Appears that many of the vendors were giving out Rosaries and the boys were collecting them and wearing them around their necks. Short time later two priest, who had been hearing confessions, stop them and told the boys to get them off their necks and quit treating them in a sacrilious manner.

The boys told me about it and I told them to listen to the priests and quit complaining.
 
A lady I know works in a school where there’s a lot of Latino students. She often sees them wearing a Rosary around their neck-- I believe their culture sees this as a sign of good religious intent.

I think, as others have said, that what really matters is what is the actual purpose of wearing it. I’ve worn it during times of distress, especially if I couldn’t sleep at night: it felt comforting to know it was around my neck, as a reminder that my Lord and my Mother were watching over me at night.

I’ve seen a lot of famous people in the US wear the Rosary around their neck. It’s just like how soooo many people, who aren’t true Christians, wear the cross around the neck. It’s a fashion statement, means nothing to them. Do I necessarily think its sinful? Not really-- unless that Rosary or Cross has been blessed. Otherwise it’s just an item (goes back to the idea of intent… if it was purchased by the person with never meaning to be a religious item and that item was never used as a religious item, then its not going against something sacred).

Back to the OP’s question:
During the time you’re praying the Rosary, yes you hold the beads. It’s to allow your mind to stay focused on the Mysteries and not counting.

After that, I think it can be completely appropriate to wear it around your neck, as long as, it is done with respect. I don’t normally wear mine— I have one over my bed that stays there and my 2 other Rosaries are in their own small bags in a safe spot.

I think the priests might have found more offense with them COLLECTING them instead of them just wearing ONE around their neck. The vendors were kind enough to give away free Rosaries to be used for prayer and the boys were taking them when all that is needed is one to pray on.
