I was wondering because all I have been to have at least one server.

Is this a trick question? This priests clebrates the Holy sacrifice of the Mass. And…he does so privately on occassion. (with out an altar server). So…I would say that servers are not required. Just my opinion…I’m no expert.

While a server is not strictly necessary, it is necessary to have some to give the server’s responses. (ie, in a convent this would be one of the sisters).

In the FAQ section of the Sancta Missa website, there is the question of what changes take place if the priest celebrates Holy Mass without a server:
"When a priest is celebrating Mass without a server, what changes are made?
During the Prayer’s at the foot of the Altar, the server’s “Confiteor” is omitted. After the “Confiteor” of the priest, the celebrant says “Miseratur nostri…” and then “Indulgentiam…” and the rest of the prayers as usual.
Throughout the Mass the priest says all the responses that the server would normally render (i.e. “Amen”, “Et cum spiritu tuo,” etc.)
The priest has to transfer the Missal himself to the Gospel side before the “Munda cor meum…” and back to the Epistle corner prior to the Communion verse. When so doing, the priest simply moves the book, walking on the predella, and bowing before the tabernacle or altar cross."
