Are Sundays counted in the 40 days of Lent?

I was told by an ex altar boy (now grown up) that you can have whatever you gave up on the Sundays in Lent as the Sundays are not part of the 40 days of Lent. It has raised a discussion at work and I was hoping to get some confirmation on this issue.
