Are Sundays part of Lent?

Are Sundays part of Lent or not? I have heard both yes and no from different sources. Some say that since the liturgical year has “The First Sunday of Lent,” “The Second Sunday of Lent” at Mass, then Sundays are a part of Lent and the fasting/penance should continue. However, others say that Sundays are like mini Easters, and that the 40 days of Lent add up to 40 without counting Sundays, thus excluding them. What is the answer? I’m so confused as to what to do on Sundays now!!
