Are tattoo's a sin?

In California, there are no state-wide laws to regulate tattoo and piercing parlours. It is left up to the individual cities and counties, despite active lobbying from the tattoo parlours themselves to get regulations in place.

So, it’s self-regulating. A reliable and professional tattoo parlour will not work on children under 18. Many have signs even forbidding the children to come into the shop (for example, to hang out while Mom or Dad is getting inked).

If a shop does tattoo little kids, then they are not acting responsibly and should not be patronized. Also, the parents need a whack upside the head if they let the little ones get inked.

We must not judge others brothers and sisters.

Someone should look up what the word tattoo is in hebrew, and see what it means.

LOL, I have a Celtic band on my left arm I got years and years ago…I’m not violent, nor a criminal…and as far as I know…I’ve never had the “tendency.”

We were at a water park yesterday. Now if an adult has tattoos it is their business. I am now noticing 10 and 11 year old children with tatoos (not the fake ones) on a regular basis. But yesterday was a new one a baby held in her fathers arms with a small butterfly on ther leg.😦 I thought there was a law against this.:confused:

Laws on tattoos vary drastically from state to state. It is not federally regulated. Most of the rules governing tattoos here are in health department regulations (sterility, new disposable needles must always be used, etc.). But here, as in most states, there is a minimum age requirement as well. I understand that in some states, a parent may sign consent for a minor. There are a few states, I think, that outright ban tattoing completely. I do think it pretty ridiculous to tattoo a baby. I can’t imagine doing so. Are you sure it was really a permanant tattoo? Some of the temps are pretty convincing these days, especially ones drawn or painted in temporary tattoo ink or henna by hand.

As for the Catholic Church’s teaching, I asked this question of my pastor as I entered the Church, since I have a few myself. I wanted to know the Church teaching about them and whether or not I needed to have them removed. I was told there is no official Church teaching. There is a Biblical prohibition in Leviticus, but the Church considers this to be part of the laws of ritual purity, diet, and sacrifice, not a law of morality, and therefore fulfilled by Christ’s sacrifice. The other passage used by those who argue tattoos are sinful is the quote from St. Paul’s letters about keeping holy the temple of the Holy Spirit by refraining from harming your own body. I was told that whether or not this applies to tattoos specifically is a matter of theological opinion as far as the Church is concerned. So long as the tattoos are not inherently offensive to God or the Church, I was told that my tattoos are fine.
 
I know a lot of military people have them. And I’ve heard of twins each getting one half of the same tatoo. I live in a town where body art is extremely popular, and I think many have carried it too far. I can’t imagine when this fad fades, that there won’t be many people who profoundly regret doing something that permanent to themselves.
 
How about moderation in ALL things? And let the child become an adult before getting a tattoo?
 
Yes, it has been asked a zillion times. In fact, it’s probably been asked TEN zillion times by now. I really wish people used the Search function. Also, there it’s spelled “Tattoo”. Not tato. Not tatto. Not tatoo.

Not without going to a lot of trouble but I’ll give you a clue to search references if you like - try criminal psychiatry - its not a new theory so there is probably much info out there.

Have you ever pondered why you chose to get your arm tattoo, what statement you were trying to make, that the body God gave you needed to be scarred with ink, was it painful?? How much
careful consideration did you give this choice? Will you always be satisfied that your arm bears this mark while you are alive?

Maybe “as far as you know” isn’t very far?😉
 
A man that came into the store that I work at has his arm wraped in plastic wrap. You could see the tattoo under it. Why the wrap? Anyone know?
 
Tattoo artists slather the new artwork with antibacterial / anti-inflammatory gel or cream in order to keep the new work clean and lessen the chance for infection. The plastic wrap is to keep the area from getting all gunky.

I don’t think it is a sin, it just makes you look really stupid 😛
 
I can’t see how getting a tattoo would be sinful… distasteful, perhaps, but not a sin. I know it is a more permanent alteration, but it is sort of like coloring your hair. I think that in some ways it depends on the motives which one has for getting one. For instance, my h2b crushed his arm last summer. He had to get 13 screws and 2 metal plates in order to restore it to “normal.” The same summer, a kid in his parish was run over. He had the kids baseball number tattooed on his arm (opposite the scar) to remind him that what happened to him could have been much worse, that God is very merciful and how lucky he is to be alive.

I have a pouncing tiger on my right ankle. Perhaps my reasons for getting it might not have been the best, since it was a ‘coming of age’ moment to celebrate my Native American heritage ( I’m 1/4 Cherokee) and I’ve always had a strong attraction to tigers. It’s been nine years…I got it at 16…and I still don’t regret it. Maybe someday I will, but for now I don’t. It’s just part of me. And I don’t feel a tiger is in any way sinful.

I have thought much on having a cross done in the small of my back. So Jesus will always ‘have my back’ and as a proffesion of faith. How do you all feel about proffesions of a person’s faith such as that?
 
Tattoo’s aren’t a sin. I have a couple myself. I got my first when I was 14 years old. They’re not bad.

I knew a Priest who was covered in Tattoo’s.
