I have several questions–first, are the dead aware of things or events happening here on earth, for example, my wife, who recently passed away, chuckling at my futile tries at cooking? Secondly, we of course can pray for the dead, but can they in turn, pray for us? I believe they can, but I need better opinions. Help if you can.

She’s probably very sympathetic, and praying for you, and calling on your guardian angel to make sure you don’t accidentally harm yourself while you learn this new skill.

Yes, your wife is aware of you, and you can ask her to pray for you, if you want to. 🙂 You should also pray for her, of course.

Hi.

Catholic teaching and Scripture assure us that souls are immortal. Lord willing, your wife’s spirit is either in heaven or purgatory and is very aware (and maybe chuckling) about you and many others in their journey of faith.

As part of the Body of Christ, whether on Earth or in heaven, the saints do pray for us when we ask them to pray for us as an intercession to God. The Spirit works both ways. See the Catechism, numbers 954 through 962, for more. God bless.

I think they are the witnesses referred to in Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
who are cheering us on.

Thanks for all the comments. She knows that as far as cooking goes, anything harder than the microwave really a challenge for me. She was a great gal, and I don’t think she had an enemy in the whole world. Not to judge, but if shes not in heaven or purgatory, we’re all in bad shape. People say that life goes on. but without her, it’s not going to be the same. Thanks again.

Nor would you want it to be, when you think about it. Have you thought of taking a cooking class? It would be a way to honour her memory, as well as solve the problem of learning how to cook. 🙂
