Are the Hallmark cable channels more wholesome than

…ABC Family? The latter has The Fosters, for crying out loud!
 
At one time Hallmark was the only channel broadcasting Catholic Mass and mainline Protestant services.

Now we have EWTN for mass, but mainline Protestant programming is gone for good. :rolleyes:😦
 
Depends. If you like reruns of really tiresome old programs from the past and poorly acted new movies…🤷

I tend to watch documentaries and bio-pics, and a stash of favorite comedy movies.
If you’re looking fro wholesome, you’ll not find it on cable, for the most part.
 
While the Hallmark movies are a bit schmaltzy and predictable,I confess I do enjoy so e of the series movies and the Christmas movies.🙂

But, but…my beloved Andrew McCarthy does Hallmark movies. Surely you don’t mean him…and my name is not Shirley. 😃
 
Hallmark is one of the few channels that I have on for my mother with dementia. It seems like it is EWTN during the day and Hallmark at night. Although, they do repeat the same movies over and over. Not so bad for her, as she does not remember seeing a movie just recently. Another good channel is Aspire. Unfortunately, most of tv is pretty bad!

I just really dislike schmaltzy stuff. :banghead:
I like him as an actor, but surely he can get better scripts, right Shirley? 😃

They’ve also run movie versions of the “cozy mysteries” that are a trend now.🙂 Hallmark made-for-tv movies are, at least, lighter than the Lifetime Television For Women are. I used to watch the Lifetimes, but only because they ran so many of Elizabeth Montgomery movies on that channel and I just loved her. Has anyone seen “Sins of the Mother” and “Black Widow Murders”? While they were pretty awful, they were still interesting to watch, and I do like the actress.

I love to watch the old Columbo shows while I am drinking my morning coffee! I think I get the character more, now that I am older and annoying too! 😉
 
I am a huge fan of Melissa Joan Hart and I was excited when her new show Melissa & Joey was announced in 2010, because I didn’t know what ABC Family was like, as I usually am not a subscriber to cable TV services.

Hart got to work early dispelling notions that it would be a rated-G show. ABC Family’s slogan is/was “A New Kind of Family” and that’s like saying “The New Normal”. There was a crude sexual reference in the first episode of Melissa & Joey and it went downhill from there. I tuned out and tuned back in, conflicted about watching a trashy show, or watching the virtuous MJH in a variety of attractive costumes. I tuned in for the series finale last Wednesday, and turned it off halfway through. I was treated to a barrage of baby-hating, commitment-phobic, sex-a-holic characters, crude jokes, and stupid dialogue. I made a comment on MJH’s Facebook page about how disappointed I was in the whole series. MJH is better than this tripe. She has a real husband, who I believe will stay married to her for life. She has three children, handsome boys who are the loves of her life. She loves being a mother and even started a fashion clothing line for young boys. She is a Republican who supported Mitt Romney in the 2012 election. She is a baptized Catholic who, although not practicing the Catholic faith, goes to a Christian church with her family and prays every day.

ABC Family is a corrupting influence and does a disservice to the word “family”.

I have no opinion on Hallmark, because I almost never watch cable TV and it may not even be in the lineup at my parents’ house.

Half of what I know comes from watching Columbo. 👍

One more thing…
 
Hallmark…meh…predictable…if you like watching the world from a fish bowl. The only show worth watching this summer is"Complications" on USA and of course “Outlander” on Starz. Can’t wait to get back to …The Flash and Agents of SHIELD…Bones…Big Bang Theory…and new shows on HGTV.

Actually, I know him and he’s a poor actor (he knows it too) but a fantastic writer and director.

“Wholesome” is a bad adjective, one that should be avoided. The connotations are not good.

Hallmark channel movies are terrible; bland, unchallenging treacle. The only interest in watching Hallmark movies is to look for the quiet desperation in the eyes of the has-beens who star in them.

Up channel movies are even worse. Not only do you have desperate has-beens and C-listers, but you can be sure that most of them don’t exactly live their lives in accordance with the faith-based mission of the channel. There’s something creepily mercenary about the whole thing.
 
Wholesome is what I believe is needed today, as in good and wholesome living and viewing.
