Are The JW's Evil?

I came accross the question in the Islam forum, asking if Islam is evil. (Islam means being subjected to God). I have also heard many fundamentalists and some books claiming that JW is evil.

What are your thoughts?

One thing to remember is to separate the sin from the sinner.

I would say that what the JWs teach that is in error (and there are alot of errors in what the JWs teach) is evil in that it makes God out to be less than what He truly is AND they make it appear that God has given us less than He has truly given us. So, yes, in many respects the teachings of the JWs are evil.

Also, the actions of certain JWs can be evil just like our own actions can be evil. Now, in the JWs’ case, there are certain actions encouraged by the JW religion that are evil such as shunning and pressuring individuals through the threat of shunning into certain actions such as refusing Blood Transfusions.

Now, in many cases the people among the JWs who teach this error and behave in ways encouraged by the JWs, do this in ignorance. This does not make the actions any less evil but it does perhaps lessen their own responsibility toward doing these evil acts since they may not know any better. Those who participate in these evil acts but know better are the ones that are in real trouble. Since only God can make these judgments, I think we would be better off giving people the benefit of the doubt (just as we hope people will give us the benefit of the doubt when we screw up).

And, we should by giving our JW friends the benefit of the doubt in these areas, reach out to them with the truths of the Catholic Church in a spirit of love and charity. By doing this we will collaborate with God in saving many of our lost brothers and sisters from this evil and lead tons of lost souls to Christ.

I agree with Jeff… the JW’s I knew were wonderful, caring brothers and sisters. They truly believed with their whole hearts that they were serving God. They were willing to give up so much (holidays - family who weren’t JW’s - an education - etc.) just because they thought it was pleasing to God. Please don’t think of them, individually, as evil. What they believe is evil. It’s a bunch of lies and since Satan is the Father of all lies - I’m sure it thrills him to know that these good people are believing it - the worst IMO is that Jesus was not God.

We should pray for them and all the lost who do not know the truth about God.

Having come out of the JW’s after being raised in it, it is VERY tempting to jump on the “THEY ARE EVIL” bandwagon. However, I really don’t think that would be fair. The injustices that have happened to me and others like me that have left are definitely no bed of roses. When people do evil things, does that make them evil? Some say yes some say no. I think the JW’s are laboring under a misconception as to what is truth (and in a lot of cases “what is reality”). Because of this, their actions and ideas can seem very much like “evil,” but is it? I think when we say “evil” we are really denoting the Evil One, and that one is without redemption. To use that label on a human might be crossing the line and in our hearts writing that person off as one that will never know the mercy of God. I hope I don’t do that, and if I have in the past may our great God and savior have Mercy on me.

I would generally agree with a caveat. I think there are a lot of protestant pastors, and heads of other christian religions who in good faith believe they are leading others to God.

I can’t honestly say I think that about the highest levels of the JW organization. I count the JW’s with whom I have been studying for over a year now as my friends, and I believe they are trying to do God’s work. But I think at the highest levels, their leardeship is truely evil.

Hi Somoreno,
I agree with you - I’ve known many JW’s who were very kind people - are you still studying with them? If so, are you doing it because you are considering becoming a JW or are you hoping to evangelize them?

Just curious… 🙂

God Bless,

defending my faith, NOT considering becomming one. But I feel bad for them, good people, misled…

Glad to see there is some sense in this thread.

I think it’s odd to ask if any GROUP of people is evil. Were you to say that all Witnesses of Jehovah are evil you’d be just as crazy to say “all white people are evil”. It’s stereotyping and it’s not really something that should ever be encouraged.

Does the Watchtower believe that all other religions are evil - ruled by Satan?

The question posed by the title of this thread is inherently offensive; merely in being asked, it suggests “Yes” is a possible answer to the query. Such a generalization would flaunt the rule of charity that is incumbent on those of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the rules of this forum aside.

This thread is closed. Thanks to all who have participated.
