Are the Knights Templar the modern freemasons?

My sister got an inexplicable E-mail claiming that the Knights Templar remnants fled to Portugal, Scotland and England to begin the Freemasons. I am pretty sure this is rubbish, so where did this false information come from? Also, if the Knights Templar had become Freemasonry, why are Freemasons be so anti-Catholic?
