Hi,

I’m interested in hearing how the new TLM is doing in your city.

In my city we’ve had a TLM parish for a long time before the Summorum Pontificum. I’m curious how things are going in cities that were previously without a Latin mass, but now have one because of the SP.

Are lots of people going to the EF masses? Is there enough interest to have a TLM every Sunday with as many people as attend the other masses?

Hey there. Well at the moment by me there is only one place that offers the EO form only, and it’s ranked as an “oratory” at present. I’ve just started attending there, Sundays were a pretty packed house (it’s a converted chapel, but of fairly decent size), they have Low Mass and then a High Mass every Sunday. I went to a Wed. morning Mass this past week and I think there might have been around 20 people there…but again, that was during the week.

But I have noticed it growing out a bit more into the wider area here. Before, that was the only place one could go for the EO form in the entire diocese (which, being in NE Wisconsin, covers a LOT of area). However I’m now seeing that there are a couple Sunday evening Masses scheduled in other towns that will be celebrated in the EO form…so it seems to be spreading!

Ours is moderately well attended. It’s definitely not packed. However, it’s not exactly advertised either. It’s not in the bulletin, it’s not on the website, and it’s not on masstimes.org.

Additionally, it’s at 3pm on Sundays, which most people wouldn’t expect (I didn’t). It kinda feels like their trying to hide us away.

If anyone reading this is in or near Carmel, Indiana (just north of Indy), come to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton at 3pm on Sunday.

Pax Vobiscum,
Zach

I think not only size but growth matters more. If while posting if any one could remark on whether attendence is growing, waning or stable, I would like to add this request to the OP, if no one minds.

3PM Sunday. and not advertised!. Sounds like that pastor really embraces the TLM. It should be at 8 or 9AM and advertised and talked about.

Here in Dublin the church is generally around 75% full at our Sunday High Mass. When the Lassus Scholars sing the church is generally only standing room. For a weekday Mass I dont think the priest prepares hosts for any more than 25 or so.

cpm - yeah, about 75% sounds right.

Mass last Sunday with the choir was awesome wasn’t it…

It was absolutely brilliant, It was the first time I had properly heard the Lassus Scholars sing in St Kevin’s, since I usually sing with them. (But the sermon was another story altogether!). Were you there on the 14th September for Solemn High Mass with Missa Papae Marcelli, in my opinion two of the best combinations on earth.

No mate, wasn’t there on the 14th… is “Missa Papae Marcelli” something to do with the music? I’m not very learned in the music arena…

Missa Papae Marcelli is a mass setting by Palestrina. Absolute heaven on earth

Our Cathedral has been offering an EF mass every Sunday since this January. The attendance doesn’t constitute anything close to a “packed house,” but I’d say there are somewhere between 50-70 people there every week. I would say that it has slowly but steadily been growing over this course of time, with probably only 30-40 people attending the first time I went.

This is a positive sign for those who like the TLM. Hopefully the growth will be considered more than the numbers. My priest is a pragmatist. He would also consider the collection.

The priest who says the Mass is not the pastor, nor was he the one that chose the time.

Right now there is none in my city. We are in a priest shortage and I think they are more concerned with making sure mass is said than worrying about what form it is

Why would a priest replace a well-attended OF Mass with the EF?
It seems as if the EF is offered in those places where TPTB feel that they are losing parishioners so fast they have to try anything to bring them back. Not a good way to measure progress with the EF, is it? I’m just trying to be realistic here.

Now in those parishes where the EF is offered exclusively, Institute, FSSP, SSPX, I’d say that they are well-attended. At least the ones that I’ve attended.

No, but if we had an interest in our parish I think I know how our priest would handle it. He would probably start with an occasional TLM and see how it was received and then move from there. This could easily be done on a Holy Day or some other special feast.
