Are the Village People the right choice for Catholic Charities?

I live in Omaha and today I recieved a letter from Catholic Charities that the Village People from the ‘70s(YMCA, In the Navy) will be the act at IrishFest in March 2006. This is Catholic Charities’ BIG fundraiser and tickets for the dinner are $150 a person.

Not to malign them without dcumented evidence but weren’t the Village People all openly practicing homsexuality and celebrating all the Greenwich Village has come to be associated with? Am I wrong to think that while they are a formerly popular band with a potential for drawing a crowd, they are not the best candidates for a Catholic function?

I have more to say but will wait on your views.

I guess it’s something of a cliche that gay people enjoy their music, but I like it too. A quick perusal of their website officialvillagepeople.com/index.htm
reveals that one of them is married and two of them have children. So not ALL of them can be practicing homosexuals.

FWIW, I noticed nothing that even remotely promoted homosexuality while having a look at their website.

I honestly can’t think of any reason they would be inappropriate for a catholic function.
 
Village People may be okay, but considering the news out of Boston I have my doubts about Catholic Charities. 😉
 
Catholic Charities agencies are run by various persons who may or may not be Catholic, and may or may not agree with Catholic principles. This is not the first time the Boston organization has found trouble for accepting very un-Catholic practices, and it is best described as a social service agency that was started by the Catholic Church but which capitulated to secular standards when it began accepting the bulk of its monies from public sources. I worked for this agency in two different dioceses and was appalled at what I saw in both of them. I can honestly state that I will never work for them again after witnessing tolerance for corruption and a complete lack of oversight. It still sickens me today.
My best advice is to stay away unless you know for sure what your money is being used for.

And Yet…Catholic Charities does so many wonderful things for so many. I have the utmost respect for the work they do since I have been the recipient of their services. I see it more as a problem with large urban areas. Maybe the problem with all the corruption in that area stems from the lack of strong leadership in those diocese. Or, perhaps, the folks in that area have grown to accept this as “normal” behavior so it becomes the next logical progression to accept corruption around them. How sad! It never ceases to amaze me that urban areas think that rural America is backwards and stupid, yet the rural areas of this country never seem to have half the problems the urban areas do with moral and ethical dilemas.

Gay or not, they used to be a commonly accepted icon of gayness so the imagery is there whether or not it is backed up in a portion of reality to which I hope we never are treated. :rolleyes:

Given their advanced years, maybe now they are just “mildly amused” rather than gay! 😛
