Title says it all. Are there official rubrics, or not, for altar servers? I know there is a General way of doing things, but fan adaptations be made?

For example, could you adapt to have a Missa Cantata, with incense, and with only two servers? I can conceive how this would work, but would it be licit?

I’ve served at a Missa Cantata when there were three of us but never two. I can’t remember how we did it. I think one of the acolytes doubled up as a thurifer or something.

I’m not sure the official liturgical books contain rubrics for the alter servers. However, there are many resources on how to serve Mass in the Extraordinary Form. These can often be obtained from organisations that promote and support the celebration of Mass in the Extraordinary Form. Here is an example of such a resource from the Latin Mass Society in England.

A Roman Ceremonial will give very detailed instructions for everyone with a role in the liturgy, including the acolytes.

I have one, the 1935 edition in French by Léon Le Vavasseur.
