Are there any anglicans here?

I would caution you against putting too much importance on RC devotionalism. If you were to enter communion with Rome, you would be asked to subscribe to the dogmas of that Communion, not to embrace all its devotions.

However, it’s certainly reasonable to bear in mind that the Roman Communion’s devotional traditions do shape its identity, as do those of any other Christian body.

You might also bear in mind that the Eastern Catholic churches have very different devotional traditions.

If you are seriously interested in Anglican devotion, you might have a look at the book *Love’s Redeeming Work: The Anglican Quest for Holiness (*ed. Rowell, Stevenson, and Williams) and/or The Study of Anglicanism (ed. Sykes, Booty, and Knight).

I will see if I can get these books at my library, they are good about ordering them if they do not have them.

Thank you for the suggestions, and to keep and bear in mind the eastern devotions and how they contrast.

This is simply something that struck me as beyond the pale, from what I read about catholic teachings and Jesus himself. The tip off to me was the promise talking about his returning with his mother, just for people who recited this route prayer for so many days.

We have no basis to believe in the bible or catholic church teachings he will do this for anyone no matter what they do or say. It is not impossible for a christian God to do anything- but it is impossible for a church to say he can promise things he never said nor implied, or hinted at.

Considering it has been over 50 years I am told these promises are not approved, it begs the question to how long they were held by how many until any action was taken, and why still now we see these things in the lobby of a church? Even after notifying the pastor about it?

They are still there.

I have no problem with the prayers, as they are just as “justifyable” as anything else I can see.

I do not judge anyone. But I do take offense to the innocent types that are told it is pious and right to do these devotions when they are (the promises) in direct contradiction to what your church actually teaches and the bible says about Christ himself-
For these promises are by your standards pure heresy and contradict what is in the bible and what is in catholic teaching I have seen.

I think it would be the best thing to remove such things from the lobby of a catholic church when notifyed of it being there.

🙂

I am sure you agree?
Absolutely. This is from the link I posted above:

A Monitum from the Holy Office:** In certain places a booklet has appeared** with the title “The Secret of Happiness: Fifteen Prayers Revealed by Our Lord to Saint Brigid in the Church of Saint Paul in Rome,” published in various languages at Nice (and elsewhere).

Since it is asserted in this booklet that certain promises were made by God to Saint Brigid, and it is by no means certain that these promises were of supernatural origin, Ordinaries of places [bishops of dioceses] must avoid giving permission to publish or to reprint works or writings which contain the aforesaid promises.

Given at Rome, from the Holy Office, 28 January, 1954

(Acta Apostolicae Sedis 46-64, as contained in Canon Law Digest, Vol. IV, p. 389, Milwaukee: Bruce Publishing Company, 1958)

Apparently, this has been a problem since at least the 1950s. Since the devotion is not terribly well-known among Catholics, inevitably, some of these pamphlets get discovered by a well meaning person and set out without realizing the prohibition on the promises.

Thank you Rolltide, I did what I could do and notifyed them of the booklet.

It is called “In the End My Immaculate Heart Will Triumph”
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray for Us

Peace of Christ Center
1685 So. Colorodo Blvd.
Bldg, S-214
Denver, Colorado 80222

I notifyed the Pastor of the parish of my concerns of the booklet with the promises, I found out here are condemned.

I won’t know if they are still there because they have daily mass in the chapel, not the main church.

Peace

hi StrawberryJam, I have read your posts here and there. I am a convert to Catholicism from atheism (raised mormon). Years ago I was a SCUBA instructor. There is this thing that students do when they panic underwater. They throw all of their gear off and climb to the surface. This includes all the gear needed to survive underwater. It includes holding their breath, which is a dangerous thing for a SCUBA diver to do. It includes using the people around them, such as an instructor, for a “ladder” in their climb.

When I was studying Catholicism, I found myself doing this. Throwing everything religious off of me and climbing for the surface. I see that you have done this here, with this pamphlet. 😃

From experience, I can only tell you that God is who you should put your trust in. You can ask Him, He will listen. Even if you do feel awkward and strange and even ridiculously stupid. Talk to Him.
