I have always found it more poetic…

Can someone tell me whether a comma should be used to separate a quotation from its introductory phrase?

Some say, “The sky is blue.”
vs.
Some say “The sky is blue.”

(Sorry. I’m too lazy to find my Strunk and White, or look it up!)

Depends. A short introduction needs no comma. You don’t want to make it too choppy.

Your first version is correct in the United States. I believe that UK residents would quibble with the period placement, though. Lol! Their way looks as strange to us as our way looks to them.

It is strange because logically the period should be the final character, such as in programming:

PRINT “Hello World”.

You’ll get a compile error if you do it the “correct” way.
