Are there any good prayers to say before diving into a paintball game?

I’m toying with the idea of saying a small prayer before something like an paintball game or other sport/workout.

I won’t lie that I was inspired to do this by the movie Boondock Saints (not the greatest Catholic movie); that said, I think its an awesome way to honor God. 👍

God forgive me for wasting my precious time on childish games. Amen.

O God of players, hear our prayer
To play this game and play it fair,
Both win or lose; but if to lose,
Not to revile nor to abuse
But patiently to try again –
Give us the strength, O Lord. Amen.

Just kneeling and saying a short prayer, or saying grace, would also be nice.

You might want to ask for St. Barbara’s prayers, since she is the patron saint of gun-users!

I would definitely include that no one gets hurt. (OK, I know it’s just paintball, but still, anything that involves a gun of any sort can be dangerous.)

Just a guess but I reckon he is after somethign more along the lines of what a warrior would say before he goes into battle, however such prayers are not for games.

Just went back and re-read his original post; he’s asking for a prayer to be said before a game OR workout (paintball was just an example).

I can’t imagine there’s ever an “inappropriate time” for prayer. I again would suggest a prayer that the person and any participants are safe and unharmed, in the case of a sport. Nothing wrong either in asking, before a workout, that the benefits of exercise help to create a healthy body.

He also said he was inspired by the boondock saints which suggests something a bit more violent and aggressive for example from the movie:

“And when I vest my flashing sword And my hand takes hold in judgement I will take vengeance upon mine enemies And I will repay those who hate me O Lord, raise me to Thy right hand And count me among Thy saints .”

“Whosoever shed last blood. By man shall his blood be shed. For immunity of god make he the man. Destroy all that which is evil. So that which is good may flourish. And I shall count thee among my favoured sheep. And you shall have the protection of all the angels in heaven.”

"Never shall innocent blood be shed. Yet the blood of the wicked shall flow like a river. The three shall spread their blackened wings and be the vengeful striking hammer of god. "

Way to be a complete jerk.

Anyway, I think any prayer would really be appropriate. Definitely try something to St. Barbara like somebody else mentioned already. I think its great that you want a short prayer to say before you go paintballing, so what if it is a game? There’s never a wrong time to pray in my opinion.

My friend, my Brother, humility is without a doubt one of the greatest of all virtues.

I could tell you this. As a youth I had the opportunity to compete in NCAA Division 1 athletics on a scholarship. I was born into this faith and found it very natural to Pray for the strength to compete, and thanked the Lord for any ability I had. I was also very surprized to see just how many athletes attribute all their success to our Lord.

As far as Prayers? I feel that while there is much good in all of “mans” prayers. I would never overlook the power of the Our Father. That is our Lord teaching us to Pray.

If he wants to be a solider he should go and be one that is my opinion of grown ups who play paintball, if that makes me a jerk I plead guilty as charged.

Yeah since that really makes sense. Since somebody enjoys playing a game called paintball, they should really join the army and risk their life for pointless wars we get involved in. Paintball and war go hand-in-hand how could I forget? Nobody does anything like paintball just to have fun, that would just be ridiculous.

Wars always have a point.

Here’s a prayer you might use:

"Lord, please help me clobber these fools. Send your holy angels swiftly to my aid! Holy Michael the Archangel, intercede for me and crush all enemies under my feet!

"May my every paintball find its mark! May the Blessed Virgin use her mighty power to crush the heads of all my enemies! May these fools be utterly annihilated. Please bless my every endeavor, watch over my every hiding place, for you are my fortress and my strength in all things, oh God! Help me penetrate my enemies’ every defense and shoot them wherever they hide.

“In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Amen.”

Or you could use the Scripture. Scriptural prayers are extremely mighty, for God’s Word is a two-edged sword.

Psalm 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [a]

2 I will say ** of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,

6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.

8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—
even the LORD, who is my refuge-

10 then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation."**

According to you they do, but a lot of other people don’t really seem to think along the same lines as you. You’re very closed-minded and opinionated aren’t you? You can think you’re always right about everything, but when it comes down to it you’re just coming off as stubborn.

I’m not to blame if you mistake your disagreeing with the point of a war with it actually not having a point. I actually think other people are always right about everything but those other people aren’t you.

Well I appreciate your opinionated responses they have been entertaining without a doubt. I’ll definitely be crying myself to sleep tonight because you think I’m wrong.

Whoever has the last word is a rotten egg :p.

EDIT: Yikes, I hope it won’t be me :o.

You don’t seem to know anything about either. I played competetive tournemant paintball for 10+ years with field and buisness sponsers. During that time I met many military, vets, police… who play the sport on weekends to keep sharp. Have op4ed, g4ed for the 20th SF through the use of paintabll equipment and when it came time for me to enlist in 2003, it was my many contacts that paintball introduced me to that got me a slot on an LRS team for the 29 ID.
A good prayer is a Hail Mary, or St. Micheal with intentions of safety and sportsmanship in the game.
