Are there any kind of jobs through the Catholic Church that lay people could do full-time?

Are there any jobs, perhaps doing missionary work, etc. where a lay Catholic could work full-time and make a living off of it?

Administration if the parish is larger. The diocese also has people working who are doing finances and all kinds of administration. Maintaining website/s and being the contact person for media. Teaching if there is a school/university connected to a parish, diocese or separate organisation within the Church. Some parishes have employed cleaners or buying services from a small business and the cleaners are then cleaning several parishes. Depending upon the needs of the building and parish itself there might be someone responsible for repair works, maintenance and making sure everything is set up for the next group.

Regarding music there might be a full time position but that one is usually shared between two-three persons. Includes leading choirs, singing and playing during Mass or other sacraments. This is highly dependent upon the size of the parish.

Health care and hospitals are sometimes Catholic so then we add nurses and doctors and all other staff needed for doing the care and facilities.

If the diocese owns a publishing company then there are usually a couple of persons employed for that. The magazine has a couple of or several employees usually. Then there are people who are responsible for producing teaching material for the diocese or nationally.

It depends where you are.

I live in a small country parish and apart from a part time admin job everything is done without charge by parishioners, except for specialist services which are provided by outside companies.

Check out Catholic Charities, there are over 1,000 organizations the Catholic Church works with. If you want something more religious, how about making coffee roasts as a monk for Mystic Monk Coffee?

You can also locate a niche religious item and buy in bulk, as an eBay store seller.

You can check out catholicjobs.com to see what kinds of openings are available. Keep in mind, though, that church jobs don’t have a reputation for paying well.

I know a lady who is a software engineer that designs web pages for Catholic companies. You can find jobs, but you may need to be creative in how you can help the Church.

I’m in admin. My job is parish communications and membership (and a variety of other things that come up).

Parishes, Schools, Apostolates and Dioceses employ many lay people, from janitors to people who run entire departments.

The pay is going to be less than a secular job in the same category, you are not going to get rich, but, you will touch lives every day.

If you’re really and truly in the market for such, let it come to you. God, more often than not, speaks through events.

Blessings,

I would get a background in business adminsitration (MBA}, a Canon Law Doctorate (JCD) or a Masters in Finance. Any one of these would be helpful at diocesan level which is what you would need to make a career that would put food on the table for you and your family. If you merely wish part time at parish level- administration or finance, these entry positions are much easier to get into but somewhat lower paying. If married male, add to the above becoming a deacon.

Only if you discern a calling to this ministry. The diaconate itself is not a paying job, and it shouldn’t be seen as a workplace “credential” like an MBA.

Of course not as it is a vocation ( and if you are married, only with the initial approval of your wife).

Teacher or support staff in a church owned school, a nurse, doctor or support staff in a Catholic hospital, landscaper, salesman or gravedigger in a Catholic cemetery, are all tasks in the church often done by lay people.

We pay our landscaper, gravediggers, support staff. At this time we do not have any salesmen on the Parish staff 🙂
