I have often heard that things sometimes get worse before they get better. For example, when one starts to exercise since they are building muscle which weights more than fat, they first put on a few pounds but if they keep with it, they eventually loose weight.

And I have often heard of people starting to do emotional healing and at first things are worse.

A day or 2 ago, I had a thought/memory of someone in my childhood who use to bully me. And I suspected that perhaps I still had not fully forgiven that person or healed from the events. So tonight I went to adoration and started to write in my diary about the things this person did and asking God to put forgiveness in my heart. The more I wrote about this person, the more events I would remember of how they bullied me. The thing was just snowballing. Eventually I had to stop writing due to time (I had to get to the grocery store before it closed) and I wanted to say a rosary. So I went to the store and came home. Nothing eventful happened. I did not feel miraculously better but I am hoping that if I keep doing these little steps, things will slowly get better in my life.

Well, all of a sudden, I am feeling a deep fear out of no where. It feels like just a fear that I am not safe. And I really have to wonder, is this some fear I stuffed and now it is coming out? Or is Satan just toying with me.

But all this to say, I have to wonder, is there biblical truth to ‘darkness before the dawn’? Or is that a secular saying?

Hmm… A few things come to mind. The major thing I’m thinking of is the end times. Things will get worse before they get better. There will be tribulation before Jesus rescues us. The Bible mentions that several times, but in 2 Tim. 3 it gets pretty close to the language you are looking for:

“1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive… 13 [and] evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse… 9 but they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.”

That’s pretty close to the language you are looking for.

Interestingly, the Message Bible translated Jeremiah 45:5 in the following way:

“And I’m doing it everywhere - all over the whole earth! So forget about making any big plans for yourself. Things are going to get worse before they get better. But don’t worry. I’ll keep you alive through the whole business.”

Is that helpful?
