Hi guys…I’m going through some discernment and want to know if there are any orders that are Friars/Brothers that teach elementary/secondary schools…I would be most interested to know if there are even any available. I have been leaning towards Dominican, but if there are any others available I would be glad to check them out…I am really interested in serving God through teaching.

I will be graduating this upcoming year (high school) so are there any orders, that teach, that I could enter right away?

Are there any Dominican orders that let me live by myself and preach by myself…while still being part of a bigger order?

Also I am absolutely in love with the habit…something just draws me to that…

Please suggest any orders…preferably Dominican that teach elementary/secondary schools.

May God be with you! 🙂

Hi there,

Dominican co-operator brothers may do almost any kind of ministry that does not require ordination. We Dominicans do wear the habit. But what is important about the habit, is not the attention that the one wearing it may get, but the attention to God that it draws.

The Brothers are not required to preach. They may, in non-liturgical settings. One of the essential elements of Dominican life is living in community. We not only live in the same building, we eat and pray (chanting the Divine Office) and recreate together. We do not live alone. Our priests ordinarily do not teach high school and certainly not elementary school.

Here is a link to some orthodox religious communities of men in the U.S.
