Are there forty days in Lent?

My friend Dave and I are trying to decide exactly how many days are in Lent. If you count 40 days without counting Sundays, Lent would end on Holy Saturday. However if you count Sundays, Lent would end on Palm Sunday. It seems that Lent, running from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday, not counting Sundays, is 38 days? Can you clear up my confusion or correct my math?
