Since I am a convert I have very limited understanding of the naming procedures. My husband is from India, raised a Hindu, so he has even LESS understanding. We gave our first son a Christian name and a Saint Middle name. Our, second has first and middle names from a Saint.
However, as we continue to expand our family we are at odds over girl names. Is it appropriate to give your child a Hindu name. NOT after a goddess but something in the language like light (Diya, Deepa, etc).
If we are blessed to have a daughter we would like to pass on her Indian culture in a name - since she will loose her last name. Our thought is to name her after the Blessed Mother in the form of Maria and combine with Rani (a Tamilian word for Queen). Her name would be Rani Maria (Queen Mary). Or, Teresa Kiran (Teresa Ray of Compassion, after Mother Teresa).
What is the Church`s position on naming like this?
