Are there modern day (Catholic) prophets that are on par with any of the biblical prophets?

If so, are they recognized as prophets during their own lifetimes?

Are there people who were prophets who were not “discovered” for 1000 years?

How does one discern a prophet?

For example- to say that someone who slams a 12 pack and drives 100 mph will be killed or get into trouble with the police is not exactly a prophet.

I would say no. They would have nothing to prophesy. Jesus is the culmination of history

Well there are events like Fatima, but that’s more Mysticism than prohpecy…

yes. Prophets are not those who foretell the future, they are those who warn about the consequences of behaviors, by individuals or by peoples and nations, that contravene God’s laws. An example would be Humanae Vitae, one of the most prophetic utterances of the 20th century. I clearly remember the protests when this encyclical was published, naw ABC has nothing to do with marriage, no it will not promote euthanasia, we aren’t talking about abortion etc. etc. Read Janet Smith’s excellent analysis “HV was right”. Everything Pope Paul VI predicted has come to pass because of the easy acceptance of ABC.

John Paul II was certainly exercising his prophetic voice, part of the charism of his office, in writing the Gospel of Life.

Annie nailed it. A prophet is one, inspired by the Holy Spirit, who calls people to faithfulness and repentence. Only occasionally will the Prophet’s job require any sort of future prediction. All our recent popes have been great examples. Others exist on a smaller scale.
