Are there modern prophets like the prophets of old? If not why not?

Seeing that the prophets of the Old Testament were trying to keep the Israelites in line with God’s commands, I’d say Archbishop Sheen qualifies.

The O.T. Prophets likewise have the Church and Magisterium and Papacy which would likewise qualify.

Thank you! I wish there was a modern prophet or seer or mystic who I could talk to.

Surprisingly, your neighborhood parish priest qualifies for that function.

By the way, I don’t know if you were aware or not, but the main Catholic answers site…
Catholic Answers
Has an apologist line you can call and talk with one of the staff apologists.

I’ve heard many homilies that in hindsight were prophetic. All Catholic Priests are instruments of Christ. There used to be an Amazing website containing many Catholic homilies recorded during Mass. I believe it was “Audio Sancto”. I’ve heard it has re surfaced by another name.

No the prophets prophesied Jesus - messiah coming. Jesus said wait patiently till he comes to get us. Priests etc keep or guide us Pope - decendent of Peter hold the church together till His return

I understand. Sometimes, it would be nice to meet someone who has the same sort of obvious supernatural gifts the prophets or many saints (Padre Pio, St Faustina, etc) had. People who see visions and work (obvious) miracles. We aren’t supposed to want these things, I suppose, because “Blessed is he who believes and has not seen,” but it doesn’t stop me, either, from wanting it at times. I think it’s natural to want that, in a way. We are drawn to certainties, and the more we “see” the more certain we feel. So we are often drawn to wanting to meet those whose gifts are so unique they seem to make the supernatural more dramatically obvious.

Again, I don’t defend it. But I totally relate to it. Though in some cases they scare me. Some mystics were stern and intimidating. Consider, a mystic isn’t infallible, so there is no guarantee they won’t be overly harsh or discouraging. I’d be crushed if I had been, for instance, one of the people at whom Padre Pio famously got scathingly angry. Not saying he ever misdirected it, in those examples, so maybe he only ever did it when it helped those people, but since there is no rule saying even mystics will use their gifts infallibly, I’m not so confident such a saint would never, ever by mistake be harsh on someone who couldn’t “take it.”.

And that terrifies me. I already often worry God doesn’t “like” me. If a mystic, full of visions and supernatural foresight and an ear for God’s audible voice, was to really lay into me, I’d probably feel like God just hated me.

So for me it’s both got a powerful draw which I crave, and also it’s scary at the same time.

A prophet is one who speaks God’s eternal Word into the present, so yes, there are very many prophets today. In fact, we are all called to be prophets - to speak and live the Word of God in our daily lives.

Only one aspect of prophesy has to do with things that are yet to come. Most of Prophesy has to do with God’s voice into the here and now. All the “prophets” of the OT had much more to say about their current generation than they did about the future.

Priests speak the Word of God into the present, which is part of the prophetic ministry.

I am not sure what “guide us Pope” means, but Popes can certainly have a prophetic voice. Pope John XXIII had amazing things to say about birth control that have been shown to be true.

Pope John Paul II published the Theology of the Body, which is also an amazing prophetic work.

There are no “descendants of Peter”. The current popes and bishops are successors of Peter.

It is the Holy Spirit that holds the Church together until His return.

I would love to get yelled at by Padre Pio 🙂 at least it’s proof!

Yes thats true we are all asked to witness gods love. People are not God. God loves unconditionally and never hates his children . Thats why reconcilliation / confession so great so you dont feel condemned like those in spiritual groups.

Thought history, there has been a tendency of any established religious organization or hierarchy to disdain and fear prophetic movements among there members or outside their ranks. Responses to such movements have ranged from outright persecution, to the attempt to regulate, to the outright denial that such prohets have legitimacy. The Catholic Church maintains that Revelation ended with the death of the last Apostle.

A solid response from @TheOldColonel. For completeness’ sake though, it’s worth pointing out that the Catholic Church does still allow for private revelation. In other words, the Church’s position is roughly that “yes there may be prophets among us, but whatever revelation they have received is for themselves only and will not be acknowledged as revelation by the Church.”
