Are there restrictions on when images and relics can be brought out for Mass?

When images or relics are put on a separate table near the altar for Mass, are there restrictions as to Feast Days when this can be done? I’ve only seen it done on Feast Days that relate to what is put out there. Can it be done at any time?

Also are there any rules as to which side to the altar that the special table can be placed? Can they be placed on both sides? Is there a special name or special requirements for that table?

And when relics are displayed, do they have to be put with their documents?

When relics are put up for veneration the documents don’t have to be there . There is nothing wrong with having a table with a Statue of a saint near the sanctuary. It is just part of the decoration.

Thanks for the reply, but I wasn’t talking about when the statues are part of the decoration. They aren’t permanently there, but they are brought out on special occassions and (if I’m not mistaken) in the sanctuary, not near it – they are on the same platform and everything.

Something like in a canonisation Mass where the saints’ relics are places near the altar on the right when facing the congregation, or during an Easter Mass with the Pope where there is a big tryptich of the Risen Christ on the left of the altar.

So in those cases, are there rules as to which side they can be placed, and are there rules about when? Must they only be on Feast Days, or can they be brought out whenever there is good reason?

No, I don’t think there is rules as to where these images should go. It all depends on the Pastor .At my parish they put this stuff on the right side of the Sabctuary because the left side is where the baptismal font is located.
