I know i’ve been asking a lot of questions lately, but i’m doing a paper on Islam for school and i’m trying to find the differances in the two faiths. I’m not sure if i should have put this in the non-Catholic religions section, but here:
Do Catholics believe that there are seven heavens? I’ve heard that there are more than one layers of Purgatory. I read that islams believe there are seven heavens that Muhammad climbed a ladder through until he reached Allah.I always thought there was only one Heaven, but then again i always thought there was only one Purgatory too. Thankyou for the answers.

There is only ONE Hell; ONE purgartoy: and ONE heaven.

The “seven layers” you are refering to come from Dante’s Divine Comdey.

The Divine Comdey is an allegory.

Allegory means: symbolical narrative

I’ve seen a lot of your threads and questions lately.
I suggest you get a copy of the book:

Catholicism for Dummies by Rev. John Trigilio and Rev. Kenneth Brighenti. Either buy the book or borrow it from a local library.

The book will be easy to read and will help you understand Catholicism: trigilio.com/

Also go to www.catholic.com and type in words like Heaven in their search field that will help you.

God Bless.

Ok, thankyou for both the answer and the recommendation.

You’re welcome! God Bless! Keep learning your faith! It’s good that you are asking questions 👍 I just want to point you into a direction that would help you get answers!!!🙂

Actually, the seven heavens originally comes from Jewish intertestamental literature (see NAB study bible commentary on 2 Corinthians 12:1-4).

The new testament does mention that Paul was caught up to the “third heaven.” (See 2 Corinthians 12:2).

Now whether that is different layers in the same heaven (like the third floor of a house) or something different will have to be answered by someone smarter then me… But it is interesting how heaven is referred to in the plural (heavens) in early Genesis chapters (1:1; 2:1,4)

. . .
I have seen references to three heavens in Medeval literature. As I recall they are: 1. the atmospheric sky, 2. the realm of the planets and the stars, 3. the abode of God and the Angels.

Sorry, I don’t have a reference for that, [and the memory is fuzzy so don’t risk any money on it.😉 ]
