My father passed away 6 months ago. My Mom now lives alone in the home where my father passed away.

She tells me that my Dad spoke when she walked into the room where he had passed. He said “Oh My God”. There is a picture of him and a cross from her Mom in that room. She also says that she has felt a feeling of two spirits passing by her while she was sitting on the couch. She believes it was my Dad and her Mom.

She also tells me that there are kids in the neighborhood harassing her. By playing pranks, like ringing the doorbell, throwing a basketball against her back door that has glass panes, breaking a vase that was on her back porch, and ringing the wind chime that is on the back porch also. Two game camera’s were installed and there is nothing out of the ordinary on the pictures.

I’m getting concerned about this. What does the Catholic faith believe about spirits of the deceased returning?

This situation needs to be discussed with a *knowledgeable *priest. If the parish priest in not able to help, contact the diocese, which is supposed to have an exorcist.

Not saying this is terribly serious, but they will be better able to evaluate the situation and advise, much more than random strangers on the internet 😃

If you aren’t sure what you believe in this area, read the book “The Rite: Making of a Modern Exorcist.” Having the house blessed by a priest can often help.

Why does it have to be 'spirits of the deceased returning" ? Why not just demons using their knowledge and pretending to be the deceased?

In a word, yes, there are spirits. Holy Scriptures says that we are to test the spirits to know if they are from God, so that would mean there are those that are NOT from God, i.e. Evil, i.e. up to no good.

Please speak with a priest about this. They will get you in touch with the proper authorities and do a proper examination. Do not attempt to handle this on your own, but do pray.

Oh goodness. What y’all are telling me is rather scary. I just thought it could be her adjusting to my Dad not being there. Maybe her imagination. Or maybe, she is not stable at the time due to grieving.

And, it may be. Regardless, having a house blessed is never a bad idea. You should be able to have it setup rather easily by calling the local parish. Also, suggest that she go to confession, especially if she has not gone in a long time, and practice her faith, if she is not regularly doing so. Receiving the sacraments is always helpful if it is demonic or just bringing peace.

I do believe your Mom is depressed and needs your support and encouragement. Counseling from her priest, or a support group will be helpful. To lessen anxiety, bring Mom first to a family doctor. Your family doctor will refer Mom to a mental health professional if necessary.
