I try to go to confession and receive Holy Communion every week. But when I don’t go to confession (I missed about five times during 2008) I still have received Holy Communion. The question, while having relations with my wife as part of our foreplay and sometimes during relations we talk about and have sexual fantasies. Does this practice have to be confessed? If it has to be confessed is it a mortal or venial sin? I hope I didn’t commit a mortal sin by doing this. I have been confessing this by saying I have had impure thoughts and desires. Is this the correct way of confessing this?

Thank You,

Generally, No, it’s not a sin. At least it doesn’t have to be. If the fantasies involve lusting after other people, then that could be a sort of infidelity. If the fantasies encourage you two to treat each other as objects of pleasure instead of people, or otherwise degrade you, then that would be dishonoring yourself and your spouse. If it’s neither of those but you feel guilty after it, you should at least avoid it until you form your conscience on the issue.
