Hello everyone,

I was listening to a song on the radio and my mom made me turn the song off because she said it had “bad” lyrics. The phrase in the song that she was referring to was “run like hell”. Is phrase considered vulgar or sinful? I always thought that since the phrase is not using our Lord’s name in vain and it’s certainly not degrading anybody, that it was okay. Could anybody please shed some light on this?

Thanks.

It might be considered vulgar in some manner but I wouldn’t call it profane. Profanity is something blasphemous or offensive directed towards God. The word “hell” isn’t necessarily, nor very likely to be used in that context in most music.

It’s best to be courteous if music or noise is bothering someone else, but it’s not profanity.

I hope it was Pink Floyd’s ‘Run Like Hell’ - great song:thumbsup:

Thanks for the replies. So it wouldn’t be sinful to listen to the song, as long as I turn it off if anybody is bothered by it?

Well, it depends on how old you are, and what your mom thinks about it. If you’re still living with your parents, and your mom asks you not to listen to it, then you shouldn’t listen to it. If she just doesn’t want to hear it herself, then you can listen to it. You can mention to her that you thought it was all right because it wasn’t God’s name or degrading to anyone, but you should probably abide by her decision even if you can’t convince her.

Just my $0.02.

As my mom puts it in her RE classes, “Hell’s not a bad word; it’s bad place.” That being said, however, if someone doesn’t want to listen to the song because of it, be courteous and turn it off. But no, the word itself is not profane
