I understand humans are above all creatures, but i also understand we must respect other creatures and not be cruel. 1. Are lab workers who abuse animals mentally and physically for “experiments” committing a mortal sin even though it isn’t against the law? 2. Are Farm/company owners committing mortal sins by raising animals in inhumane and cruel conditions. 3. Will animals go to heaven?
Thanks!!!

Abuse is abuse. It is immoral and I do believe it is a sin to abuse an animal with malevolent intent.

Would it be safe to say someone who (on a regular basis) continues abuse and mistreatment to multiple animals will end up in Hell?

What is the reason you ask. Is this a hypothetical question, or do you or someone you know, work in the field?

I ask because someone told me the only way they get peace knowing animals are abused is by God providing heaven to them, and I also wondered whether the offenders will go to Hell for repeated behavior like this

Animals do not go to Heaven. The Church does not teach this.
Based on scripture I think it’s at least possible animals will exist in heaven but as far as animals here like our pets dying and going to heaven- no that is not possible and the reasons are obvious.

As the Church has never defined where the souls of animals go after death, I’d be interested to read your obvious reasons.

What Jesus told us about salvation and how one gets to Heaven cannot apply to animals as they have no free will and with them there is no concept of right and wrong or morality at all.

We humans have spiritual and eternal souls. Animals souls are purely material and cease to exist at death.

But I think Jesus was talking about humans. Surely it is possible there is another route for animals.

God will decide, who goes to hell. It is not up to use who comment on this Catholic Answers Forum.

CCC 2417 God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image. Hence it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. They may be domesticated to help man in his work and leisure. Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.

The Church teaches that animals do not have souls and cannot sin. (therefore they don’t go to Hell.) Several recent Popes have made various different non-infallible statements on “whether animals go to Heaven”. Some have suggested yes and others have said no.

I don’t think the Church has spoken definitively on the issue of where animals end up, and in any event much of Heaven is beyond our earthly grasp. I think we can trust God to take care of His creation in an appropriate way as he cares about sparrows and everything in it. I also realize that pets going to Heaven is a hot button topic on here, so I will now mute the thread as I am not interested in arguing this point.

Kindness to animals is an important tenet in Judaism. Therefore, hunting animals for sport is prohibited, as is any form of animal abuse, including painful slaughter for food (which is not kosher), except using animals for medical or psychological experimentation to help humans. Even then, however, the rules of the APA (American Psychological Association) against cruelty to animals apply.

Personally, I believe animals go to heaven as they are innocent of wrongdoing. This is my personal belief, not necessarily held by Judaism or Catholicism. As to animal abusers, only Gd can decide, as in all other cases.

God always looks at the intent of the heart. A person’s actions and words reveal a lot about the person. Jesus said, “from the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks”, and the same could be said for their hands or deeds. So a person who malevolently abuses animals could very well be in mortal sin because of the intent of their heart and their resistance to God’s graces. There is a strong connection between people who abuse animals and people who eventually go on to abuse people or become serial killers.

On the other hand, animal abuse is also frequently a sign of people who have been abused themselves, or who have a severe mental-social disorder, or both. So, whether these people are really in mortal sin or not is only known to God. We might think that we are better than these people when we could be just like them - or worse - if we had lived their life. This is why we must never judge and always pray for everybody no matter how repugnant.

I remember when I was a 3-year-old boy, I did something very bad. I would take the cats on the farm and I would carry them up to the porch and then hurl them off the porch. I remember I found this amusing and my parents saw me do it but didn’t stop me. I also remember how my parents would frequently shout and yell at each other. I still have a distinct memory of being curled up in a ball in my bed and crying while there was a thunderstorm outside and my parents were shouting at each other downstairs. In retrospect, all these years later, I really do believe there was a connection between how I treated the cats as a toddler and the fighting of my parents. I believe my maltreatment towards the cats was a twisted way to feel like I had control or power over something in my life.

Animals do not possess rational souls like human beings or angels, which means they cannot experience the Beatific Vision. The Beatific Vision is supernatural love between God and the creature. But, it is possible that animals can enjoy natural happiness in Heaven. Because man was always meant from the beginning to ascend far beyond the glory of Eden, we are not destined for natural happiness but supernatural happiness, should we choose.
