If you arrive to mass late and accidently miss the confideire (don’t know if I spelled that right), where the priest forgives everyone of their venial sins, are yours forgiven? Are you to abstain from communion if you miss this part of mass? And if you do miss it, is it permissible to recieve communion if you say a silent prayer asking for forgiveness of your venial sins?

P.S. I know the scenario is entirely different for mortal sins, I’m stictly asking about venial sins.

Thank you for your response.

Only being in a state of mortal sin means you cannot receive communion.
If you only have outstanding venial sins then you are allowed to receive Communion.

In fact, receiving Communion also remits venial sin.

Or you can simply make a sincere Act of Contrition on your own, that too remits venial sin.

Anyone can commit a venial sin just in the time it takes to walk up to communion. You can receive with venial sins, and I’ve also heard Communion itself wipes away venial sins.

I don’t think that the Confiteor actually forgives venial sins. Maybe somebody knowledgeable in this can provide some exact citation, but I don’t think that the Confiteor, and what the Priest says after it, actually forgives sins.

There may be some sort of clarification on this in the new translation of the Novus Ordo that might be coming out soon.
