Are these words foul language?

Wired, it seems like you have made a decision, and it’s good that you have. Just don’t be in the grey area where you would be battling it over in your mind as to whether it’s acceptable or not all the time, it would become scrupulosity.

This is something I’d like to pick everyone’s brain about. I’m honestly curious about how someone can restrain themselves from swearing in that kind of instance. When you stub your toe, or something makes you angry, how can someone have enough conscious and rational thought to stop themselves from cursing? This is basically the only time I do use that sort of language, when I’m angry. How does everyone else stop themselves from using those words?

A lot of it is a matter of habit, I think. Of course, it helps if one has never gotten into the habit of using those words in the first place. But even if one has, it’s just something one would need to work on a little at a time. Make a concerted effort to be conscious of it in those moments.

Kids do help a lot, too. They definitely keep you aware of what words you are saying.

I used to swear like a sailor. I stopped using everything I thought was swearing (except for the 2 instances in thie thread, which I thought were ok). I just decided to stop and I only slipped up a few times over the first couple of weeks. It’s easier than you think. I can stop saying these last two, also.
TheRiver, what would make you think I’d become scrupulous over the issue? I’m pretty sure I’ve been wrong all this time and shouldn’t be using these words anymore. I even asked a trusted friend a while ago and even my friend was shocked that I didn’t know those were offensive. Go figure! ha
Anyway, I’ve decided and it’s settled. No more of that for me. They are not acceptable. They will join the list of words I no longer say. Of course, I have slipped THREE times already, but that will end soon. I can do this. Anyone else want to join me on a “Clean up the language campaign”? I initially stopped swearing because I figured the same mouth that receives Jesus really shouldn’t be polluted with swear words. Any takers?

Are words like "pissed off"or “freaking” considered foul language?

My whole belief with profanity is that none of it is wrong. In certain circumstances. Hear me out. No, you shouldn’t curse in front of grandmothers or fathers (unless they’re alright with it) because there’s a great chance they’re against it, and then you would NOT be treating others the way they would want to be treated and that would be somewhat sinful.

Swearing isn’t allowed in the classroom (I’m a teacher) because this is a professional place and that is behaving unprofessionally.

You shouldn’t swear in places like a church, because there’s really just no place for it in a sacred building.

If you call someone a motherf-er and mean it, then that is NOT treating someone how they’d want to be treated and yes, that is bad. If you call your friend that in a joking way and you both know it, I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

People before me were posting about how only 4-year-olds think it’s funny to swear…that may be true, but I (and most people) don’t swear to be funny; they swear because…well, there could be a hundred reasons. You drop a wrench on your foot. Dammit! What’s the difference if you say that or “son of a biscuit”, or “darnit” for example? Do you really think that God is listening up in Heaven with a close ear with a “Oh, what’s he gonna say…oh he said darnit instead of dammit so he didn’t sin” attitude?

Do you really think that God has a list (in all different languages, mind you) of all possible swear words, some ranked worse than others, with which track is kept?

When you think of swearing like that it really illustrates how there’s nothing wrong with it in many circumstances.

Just a little peep to note I am not the one who labeled certain words as “foul language” and we really should not get upset if otherwise intelligent, literate people choose to portray themselves in another light at times. I also am not the one who assigned any degree of sinfulness or guilt to this issue, because OP did not ask that question.

Judging by your earlier post, and even this one here, it’s quite obvious, and rather insulting that you liken people who use “foul language” to four-year-old’s.

I fail to see any reason as to why it would be unintelligent to use foul language at times, does the IQ drop when those words are used? Chances are the programming behind this forum board had plenty of comments during development where random expletives were used when the programmers got frustrated with errors, so you’re in essence using something created by four-year-old’s.

Don’t think you have fooled people by your roundabout terms, the contempt is obvious.

I don’t think puzzleannie is trying to insult anyone personally. She’s simply stating a common perception. There’s a reason that we don’t use such words while in a classroom or in Church (as alongexpected said) or in a job interview. Most people are not comfortable with using coarse language in those settings and to do so would be viewed as somewhat childish (which is kind of ironic as the language is also referred to as “adult language”).

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.” Ephesians 5:3-4

Those are highly subjective, I do not find a lot of words obscene but some others do. They are just part of my normal vocabulary, and I’m sure a lot of others feel the same way. It would appear it’s giving caution on what you say when it’s required of you.

What is “foolish talk” suppose there’s a couple, they call each other lovey dovey, and etc. and silly names like that, that could be considered foolish talk, so using your reasoning, it would be immoral
