Are They Both Committing Adultry?

If a married person has sex with an unmarried person, are they both committing adultery or is it only the married person committing it?
 
My understanding is that it is only the married person that is committing adultery. The other person is sinning in other ways.
 
The theological definition is:

Adultery is defined as carnal connection between a married person and one unmarried, or between a married person and the spouse of another.
Catholic Encyclopedia

Based on this, I would say both.
 
I recall an old adage: We commit our sins two by two, but repent them one by one. 😉
 
I gotta ask, did a Seinfeld episode make you ask this?

I saw an epidoe where George sleeps with a married woman. (She wanted to get back at her husband for something, I don’t recall) and she explained to George that only she comitted adultery.

Just wondering, cuz that made me almost post this question when I saw the episode 🙂
 
I was taught that “adultery” is meant more broadly than just sex involving a person married to someone else, that in the Ten Commandments it refers to “fornication”, sex outside of marriage.

If you are referring to the Sixth Commandment, you are correct that it refers to **all **sins against **chastity **and marriage:

contraception, homosexual sex, adultery, fornication, masterbation, artificial conception techniques such as in vitro, divorce, bigamy, polygamy, and more.

Yes, that’s how I understood it, and what I was taught in Catholic school back in the “olden days” in the 50’s & 60’s. Back then it was a cultural as well as religious definition.

However, look at the post from Cattitude quoting the Catholic Encyclopedia. When did the Church’s definition change?

The cultural definition has definitely changed: the common perception these days is that adultery refers only to sex with someone who has a spouse and that as long as neither dating partner is married to someone else, then sex is ok.

The Church’s definition of adultery has not changed.

In the context of the Sixth commandment it means all sexual sins-- “adultery” basically taking the form of shorthand when listing the commandments. When defining a particular sex act, it has the meaning outlined by Cattitude.

Uh no, I had a female friend who was trying to get another man in the sack (not me) and when I told her he was a Christian who was concerned about committing adultery.
 
It is adultery for both of them if one of the participants is married. So, the single person would also be committing adultery because they would be sleeping with a married person…

Both, unless the unmarried person is unaware of the marriage. However, the only difference is the number of people directly hurt by the act. It is a mortal sin either way.

According to the Bible, they are both committing adultery. The unmarried person is committing adultery against their future spouse.

Absolutely, and to expand on that… If ANYONE is having sex outside of marriage, that too is considered adultery, whether they’re single, married, or whatever. Any sexual sin falls under the 6th Commandment, “Thou shall not commit adultery”. This includes sex with a married person; sex while you’re not married; masturbation; pornography; impure thoughts, etc. It is all adultery.
