It seems that we are bombarded with mindless programs on television. Some shows that come to mind are Jerry Springer, Family Guy, TMZ and Dish Nation. Perhaps there is truth to the phrase *“the dumbing down of America”. *Television commercials are just as bad. The one that shows three famous sports celebrities using hair color to attract beautiful women. Madison Avenue sure knows how to tap into a man’s ego. Selling the *fountain of youth *works everytime.

Almost everything you see on T.V. is either immoral, stupid, unintertaining, violent, mindless, or propaganda. That’s why I stopped watching it, I don’t even have a T.V. that works. You can be a lot more selective on the net but you have to be careful there too. I just stick to educational sites, EWTN, etc. 👍

Family Guy
Family Guy may be many problematic things, but it is not “mindless.”

Also, you listed only a couple of shows. There are and have been plenty of intelligent programs – Arrested Development, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Battlestar Galactica, The Wire, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Whose Line Is It Anyway, the Law and Order franchise, etc.

I don’t watch TV very much because I think most of the shows are awful!!! The only shows I like besides EWTN are Undercover Boss, Criminal Minds and Law and Order. I did find out about the Military Channel and since I’m a World War II History “buff” I do watch the Military Channel if they have a program about World War II. Some of them are very interesting.

Let’s put it this way: with some exceptions, of course, most of them are not particularly GOOD influences. Some may be rather neutral, but the majority of shows, I believe, have negative influences or are just not entertaining. However, I tend to think many things today are not as good as they used to be, television included.

One of the most popular tv shows in the last few years is about a “good” serial killer.
You tell me…

Are you talking about Dexter?

Yes this has me puzzled. I just don’t understand its popularity.

On the other hand I like NCIS, Once Upon a Time, Beauty and the Beast, and the Big Bang Theory.

I stick mainly with the Weather Channel, Food Network and EWTN and the Science Channel for the most part.

I think so.

I watch way too much TV and I need to STOP. I had Monday off and one show had a brother and a sister who were accused of sleeping together, given a lie detector test about it and both failed.

On another channel about strange addictions, two of the strange addictions were a man who loved to pull slimy wet hair out every shower drain he could find, and a transgendered individual who lived 12 hours a day at his/her house living as a baby. Diapers, footy pajamas, pacifier, slept in a crib, the whole nine yards.

Then the Honey Boo Boo show. It’s getting bad. I think I must give it up for Lent.

I don’t know what is going on with the world anymore.

😛

This was Law and Order SVU, no?

Much of what we find on television are the fruits of chaos. Same thing with the Internet. I recently listened to a radio show interviewing Ted Koppel, where he describes modern cable news stations as being politically biased, unlike the news reporters of the olden dayswho told the story -as honestly and truthful as possible. He blames cable television, and I agree.

The problem as i see it is that these days, anyone can get on tv, and do whatever it is they want, as long as it brings in the almighty dollar. :o

…the entertainment industry has become over-run by capitalist extremists. this is the future of America, because our influences make-up ‘who we are’… As they say: you are what you eat. :o

…in my honest opinion, it all went downhill when our trusted news stations became money hounds. Those whom we trusted above all set the stage for ‘capitalist entertainment’… They took the heart an soul out of it… For the most part.:o

"How did news divisions and people like [former ABC president] Roone Arledge deal with corporate takeovers, in the '80s, of network news divisions?

It didn’t matter as long as he was making money, as long as we were all making money. That was the big change that came about with 60 Minutes. They realized we could make money, and once we could, the imperative was: Do it. You’re just an operating center like any other operating center, like the Frigidaire division of General Electric. We expect them to make money; General Electric expects [its subsidiary] NBC News to make money."

I don’t watch a lot of television anymore. We don’t have cable. I used to watch a show - Criminal Minds regularly, but was unable to watch it because my theology class fell on that day. After classes were completed I was able to watch again. I was excited to watch my show. I turned it off after watching the first few minutes of the show. It seemed more gruesome than I remembered. Just my :twocents:

TV shows are like books actually. They tell stories. They provide information. Don’t tell me the good ol days had better ones. You’re either speaking from relativistic tastes or looking at your favorite time period through rose-tinted glasses.

I think people take for granted what a powerful tool for influence television actually is… Most people watch television more than they interact with actual people in nature.

In a sense, people are altering their ‘self’ based on artificial personality types made out of love for profit… Therefore the personalities developing in America are profit driven and artificial.

I think if we look toward the introduction of the Operas, we’ll find that they were always meant to be a tool for influence. Same thing with books… Today we’ve reached the point where natural ‘influence’ has crossed paths with ‘profits’: and profit is winning.

This is like asking if food is a bad influence.

Yes, it can be, when we eat too much, and when we do not consume a balanced diet.

It’s not true that all television is trash or bad or immoral or mindless. People who say that are always the ones who don’t watch television, so how would they know? 😉

There is MUCH on television that is good. Yes, there really is.

Yes, we can watch too much television, and yes, we can watch a very unbalanced “diet” of really bad television shows that, IMO, will drag down our moral compass and make our brains turn to jelly.

But we can also monitor the amount of television we watch, and we can choose to watch uplifting or thought-provoking or useful shows.

And there is much that has elements of good, but we have to be discerning and separate what is good from what is bad. I’m thinking of the various newscasts. Most local newscasts are still excellent, and keep us in touch with our neighbors, our communities, and our regions. The newscasters on these shows are our neighbors, fellow parishioners, and sometimes our friends. I see absolutely no harm and MUCH GOOD in tuning in to the local news/weather/sports.

As for the national newcasts, I think we have to be very careful. Much of what is presented is done from a “godless” or “a-religious” point of view. Also, we only hear a small amount of the facts, and the journalists will often leave things out, or push things forward that do not necessarily have any relevance, but make a good story and increase the ratings. An example of this would be the reports that the killer of the Sandy Hook children and teachers has Asperger’s. At this point, we’re not even sure that’s TRUE. And if it is true, what does it have to do with the killings? Is there a link? No one knows, and yet the journalist threw it out there with no heed of the consequences. I think it was irresponsible journalism.

That’s the kind of discerning we have to exercise when we watch TV. There are excellent dramas and comedies. Most of them show highly immoral situations; e.g., unmarried people having sex. We need to constantly remind ourselves that “This is immoral. This is sinful.” And IMO, if the show offers nothing other than one immoral situation after another, with no plot or acting or anything–why watch it? That would be an example of a “bad” television show that is not helping to improve your life and soul.

But there are plenty of television shows that have the occasional immoral scene, but the rest of the show is rock-solid and thoughtfully-written. Why condemn shows like this? An example is the show The Unit. This was a fantastic show for Christians to watch. Shawn Ryan and David Mamet consistently wrote religion INTO the show, and gave it a fair treatment. But they also included a philandering Commanding Officer who betrayed one of the men under his command–but in the end, the cheating guy got what he deserved!

And of course, there are the “information” shows and channels, like HGTV, Food channel, etc. What is the harm in watching these?

Finally, there are many many people who live alone, who are disabled, or who are ill. For these people, television is a wonderful thing. They can turn on a football game or a newcasts and suddenly, they are part of a large group of fellow human beings who are all involved in something outside of themselves. My mother (RIP), who was invalid and homebound due to severe rheumatoid arthritis, used to love watching Cubs games on TV, and she also loved the Olympics. A lot of Senior Citizens love watching sports on TV. A lot of young mothers through the decades have gotten caught up in a soap opera–it sounds stupid and yes, soaps ARE kind of stupid! But for a young mom who is up throughout the night nursing a baby, and doesn’t get out much–a soap can be a marvelous opportunity for a little escape. Obviously, the soaps have always presented highly immoral situations, but most young mothers are able to figure out right from wrong, and say, “Wow, what trashy behavior! I’m glad that I have a good husband and a lovely family.” Give people credit for basic intelligence.

My mother, bless her heart, used to watch All My Children mainly to see how beautiful the women were and how handsome the men were. She knew good and well that the plot was silly and that the people were trashy. But she loved watching them anyway. It didn’t seem to influence her badly at all in her faith or life.

I would think this power is more on just the technical side really. The way people interact though has remained the same if you were to compare with less advanced mediums of mass communication.
I think if we look toward the introduction of the Operas, we’ll find that they were always meant to be a tool for influence. Same thing with books… Today we’ve reached the point where natural ‘influence’ has crossed paths with ‘profits’: and profit is winning.
Abusing the power of influence for profit is obviously a bad thing. Just don’t limit it to television. After all, stuff like Operas were status symbols in of themselves in terms of audience, participants, composers etc. No doubt they had their own influence during their industry’s heydays.
It’s not true that all television is trash or bad or immoral or mindless. People who say that are always the ones who don’t watch television, so how would they know? 😉
Exactly. This very same point is the reason why I haven’t much respect for those who carelessly bash television. Unless you’ve watched every TV show that’s been brought into existence (impossible obviously), then you’re making a broad generalization based on a narrow selection of trashy programming.

Ironically, I don’t even have television but just watch shows online. Maybe if people actually took in the wide selection at their fingertips, they’d realize how their generalizations needs fine tuning. You get shows for all kinds of purposes, genres, and plenty of which I have already had a taste (and liked it),

What concerns me is the level of violence, sick, shock value violence that is shown today.
Back in the 1970s Kojak and SWAT were considered the most violent shows on TV at that time. The outcry was incredible, we had “family hour” as a result.
I have three years of Kojak now on DVD, and it amazes me how tame it looks compared to what we see today. Good example: There is an episode from the second season about a girl who is raped off camera by two guys. One of the guys ends up dead and she flees. When the cops come someone says to Kojak “we know the rape happened over here…” and that was the end of of it. We didn’t really NEED to know how they knew that.
Today? They would not only show the rape, they would do a close-up of the area where the rape occured and show you in minute detail HOW the cops knew it happened there.
Why? Except for shock value, what is the point except to titilate?
Violent video games, movies and TV.
And we wonder why mass shootings happen.
