Are we Catholics wrong for saluting the American Flag?

Hello!

I was wondering, I get these funny questions asked to me by my Jehovah witness friends, and I was asked why Catholics sin by idolizing objects such as the American flag, the virgin Mary, and the cross.

Can someone help me explain this? I know it’s not wrong to salute the American flag, I love my country!

God Bless!

(I hope this was right forum to ask)

Hi, Abeyta85, welcome to CAF!

No, there is absolutely nothing wrong with saluting the American Flag. You salute it not because you worship it, but you respect it because it is a symbol of your country. (That’s mostly it I think-- I could be wrong, I’m not American.)

Now, if you worshipped the flag, held it in higher regard than God, then that would be idolatry, but obviously no one does that.

The same goes for the Blessed Virgin and the cross. We respect and honour Mary because she is a saintly woman, but we don’t worship her, as that would be idolatry.

I hope this all made sense!

God bless,

Ignore your Jehovah Witnesses friends’ questions. The Jehovah Witnesses brainwashes people. Pray for your friends. I will too.

The Jehovah Witnesses have a very iconoclast-ish version of worship and veneration - namely they can’t tell the difference. Catholics and Orthodox both know the difference, which was pretty much outlined at the Seventh Ecumenical Council. If you want to engage them to some degree, you can perhaps use this as a historical example (although be warned most groups like the Mormons and JW’s don’t accept ANY council, since they consider the Church after Jesus to be a false one).

The Fathers of the Council differentiated between two Greek words from the scripture: latria (found in Matt 4:10 and Rom 1:25) which refers to worship of God alone; and timai (found in Matt 15:4, 1 Tim 5:3, and 1 Pet 2:17) which does at times refer to God, but also refers to widows, parents, and people in general. Basically, there’s a difference between worshiping something and merely showing respect to it. This is why many misunderstand the Catholic use of statues and Orthodox use of icons - they do not serve as things to worship, but instruments of worship to assist in our prayers. I kiss an icon of Christ not to worship the wood, but to venerate He whom the image on the wood represents.

Similarly, when we salute the flag, we are not worshiping a piece of cloth, but we are showing respect to what that cloth represents, namely our nation and all it stands for. I recall a story I heard from an Irish Catholic priest who came to America and served in the American military, and how he felt his throat choke up when he had to show respect to the British flag at an Anglo-American ceremony. He fully understood what the flag meant, which was a country that his home nation had not always been at good terms with. At the same time, as a priest, he could show respect to a flag while worshiping his God, because he fully understood the difference.

I had a very good friend back in TX that was a devout Catholic. She was pretty well known as a tireless worker for the homeless and otherwise downtrodden. She eventually got pushed in to running for the City Council and won. She was the best Rep we ever had quite frankly. Thing was she would not say the Pledge of Allegiance nor salute the Flag. She said that it was because it conflicted with her Faith. I never had a discussion with her about it. I had hoped to hear her out. Since have moved away and lost touch.

By that Jehovah witness’s view loving your family, having friends, and taking pride in various causes would all be considered a sin. Fortunately for us, we know the difference between taking pride in something and idolizing it.

I had a similar conversation with JW. I asked him what would happen if a JW would run for office and he said that the person would be disfellowed (i.e. excommunicated).

A few days later I checked out Acts 13:6-12 where Paul evangelizes the Proconsul (the Proconsul is a position similar to a Provincial Premier or State Governor). Interestingly, the topic of politics did not come up in the text. Now, the interesting thing is that if being politically active is such a bad thing according to the Bible why did it not come up in the text? If the Witness knows his Bible he may point to a few chapters ahead where another Proconsul is a bad guy, but this just proves that some politicians are good and some are bad.

On the related matter of military service, we see that the New Testament offers no condemnation of this where military men are evangilized: Matthew 8:10, Luke 3:14-16 and Acts 10:24-48.

If you speak to your JW friends again, you may want to focus more on authority because in the very best circumstance they can only offer up the Watchtower’s private fallible interpretation of scripture, which IMHO makes scripture contradict itself.

God Bless,
Derek

They have a slanted view of what the word “worship” means. We are to worship God and God alone. We are to honor our parents and be repectful to others. That does not mean we worship them. By saluting the flag, as has been pointed out, we are honoring those who have died to let us have the ability to worhsip God alone. We are saying that we respect that which the flag represents
