Are we judged immediately after death?

There is no delay in a person going to Hell. Anyone dying in a state of mortal sin goes immediately to Hell.

The Church teaching:

CCC 1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into Hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.” The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

The First is for the consequences of our lifes choices:

Heb.6: 10 “For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love which you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do.

Rom. 2:6 “Who will render to every man according to his works.”

Rev. 22:12 “Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to every man according to his works”

Rev. 20:12 “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing in the presence of the throne, and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged by those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Mt. 15:16 “So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

John 3:20-21 “For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved. But he that doth truth, cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God.

THIS IS A PRIVATE JUDGMENT BETWEEN US AND OUR GOD

The “General Judgment” is a Universal PUBLIC pronouncement so that everyone we ever even met will know of our own choices and God’s Judgment. That is the perfect manifestitation of Divine Justice.

We’ll know where everyone else went; and they in turn will know where we we choose to go.

At this general Judgement we will be reunited with our physical bodies; now made perfect so that the “complete US” witll either be with God forever; or experience “perfect torment.”

Psalms 118:26 “I have declared my ways, and thou hast heard me: teach me thy justifications.”

Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts: nor your ways my ways, saith the Lord”

That dear friend is Divine Justice.

When I was still studying we were told in our Religion class that we have two judgements. The first one is particular or individual where we will know right away where our souls are going. And the second one is the General Judgment where all those who have died will come to life body and soul and face God but already know where they are going. This is true when you pray the Apostle’s Creed - the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.

That’s exactly what I thought. Have I misunderstood COPLAND 3? He said “those whose souls were in Hades will be cast body and soul into the Lake of Fire” which I took to mean a delay?

Sorry, but Copland3 will have to respond to your question as only he knows what he meant in his comment.

I can only repeat that immediately after death a soul in a state of mortal sin goes to Hell and a soul in a state of grace immediately is saved (either straight to Heaven or Purgatory first).

No I am not saying that no one goes to Hell before the final judgment. What I am saying is that when those who are not saved die, their souls go to Hades/Sheol, which is the place of torment that is often translated as Hell. But when the Judgment Day comes, everyone, good and bad will be raised bodily from the dead, which means the souls of those who are in Hell will stand in Judgment, and the unjust will be cast body and soul into the Lake of Fire, which is considered Hell too.

The question is, is the Lake of Fire the same place as Hades, and will the unjust be cast back into the same place their souls were before the Judgment Day? St. Thomas Aquinas pondered on that thought as well! Whether Hades and the Lake of Fire are exactly the same location or not really does not matter, both states of being are Hell.

The translation Hell has been used synonymously for different words which has caused some minor confusion among some English readers concerning Hell. Hell has been used for Tartarus, which is also a place where many demons are kept confined, and its a place of extreme darkness. Hell has also been used for Gehenna, which appears to be Hades.
