Are we living in trances?

Is sexual behavior done in a trance? Is driving a car done subconsciously? Is forgetting to buy cat food an outcome of a mini-trance? Again, the doorbell example is just meant as an example of our limited awareness.

Immediate memory (working memory) in humans is between 5-7 bits of information. This is an amazing fact! It’s like being able to hold a seven digit phone number in in our heads, but no room for anything else, provided the information does not get transformed into short-term or long-term memory. Again, this points to a very limited sense of awareness. Compare the working memory of humans with that of modern computers, which can usually hold 8mb bits of information.

Also keep in mind that activation of one part of the brain can inhibit another part of the brain. Sleep, for example, is actually a rapid process whereby an activation of one part of the brain inhibits another part of the brain.
Analogies between the brain and computers don’t often turn out to be useful as the architectures are so completely different.

The article linked in the OP needs much more explanation to be believable. For instance just because confusion is “employed as a trance-inducing technique, and we all experience moments of bewilderment”, it doesn’t follow at all that we therefore have bouts of trance in normal consciousness. The website “is intended to promote the use of hypnosis”, so redefining “trance” as loosely as possible may be par for the course.

The maximum awareness anyone can have is to respond immediately and intelligently to stimuli. Coming over all metaphysical impacts negatively on that.

Although imho coming over all metaphysical impacts negatively on everything. 🙂

The ‘self’ is an illusion based on a trance. You certainly can influence others while in a trance!
No, self isn’t an ‘illusion’, but I could see how one might think that way if they never gave oneself to others. Love, and the self sacrifice that it requires, couldn’t be obtained without ‘self’

“Row, row, row your boat,: Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,: Life is but a dream.”

This says it all.

If YOU truly believe life is but a dream then I dare you to pull the trigger and test that hypothesis

And I dare you to kick a rock to prove that we live in ‘reality.’ 🙂

Surely a bullet in the brain of a dreamer would disrupt the dream, but I fail to see what else it would prove.

A bullet to the head would end our dream in this world but we would immediately be transported to ‘reality’ in Heaven or Hell.

I assure you I’ve kicked my share of rocks

Let me properly re-phrase your sentence.
Surely a ‘real’ bullet fired into the ‘real’ brain of a dreamer would disrupt the dream.

But on a more serious note, if you were living in a trance it wouldn’t include a temporal dimension, this world does.

Robert, this idea of yours is found in Hinduism. That is, the notion that the universe as we know it is an illusion and we will eventually be reunited with the true reality of G-d. The idea is, however, not part of Catholicism or Judaism, although it is certain we don’t know the WHOLE truth about life in our current reality as G-d knows it.

2352 To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.
Ummm… no.

The CCC in this case is making sure that we know that a person’s culpability can be limited or eliminated by certain circumstances, but I have no idea where you got the idea that that puts us into a “trance.”

Sexual acts are always a mortal sin as long as the three requirements for a mortal sin are present. Considering the type of sin this sin is, it is very rare that a person does not know it is a sin when done outside of marriage.

Please provide some kind of solid proof for your idea that we are in a trance, rather than quoting the CCC and then twisting it to mean what you want it to mean.

Look at what I was responding to when I wrote this.

Tell me we are not in a trance when it comes to sexual behavior? Prayer is also commonly accompanied by trance of some sort. But my main point is that we go in and out of trance-like states throughout our waking hours, and that our world is based on make-believe that is driven by trances.

Please give some proof rather than making far-fetched and ludicrous statements with no basis. 🤷

Robert, what do you hope to achieve through all of this?

And to entertain the idea that our world is based on fantasy and make-believe.

And that Satan has the power to use trance in forming our sexual fantasies.
You could have stated that FIRST…

Why entertain such ideas? Are you not pleased with the life God has given you already?

I’m not exactly sure if this is a joke, or what…?

I think I’ll just leave it at this, this idea is going nowhere.
